A TechRepublic member recommends another site for testing connection speed

If you want to know how fast your connection to the Internet really is, here's a site that can help.

In “Test your Internet connection speed with the Bandwidth Speed Test” (from December 1999), I told you about a great site where you can test the speed of your Internet connection. Recently, TechRepublic member CSmith wrote to recommend another good site for evaluating your bandwidth. Here’s the scoop.

Check out 2wire.com
Here’s what CSmith wrote: “2Wire.com has a pretty good bandwidth tester that allows for several control options and can also run a ping and tracer so you can see where the bottleneck is quickly from a single screen without opening a separate command line window. If you are on the West Coast, this will probably be an excellent benchmark. For those of us out east, let's just say we need a site like this!”

The folks at 2Wire are in the business of “integrating DSL and home networking,” and their site contains a number of links to pages describing the services they offer. To test your bandwidth speed, click the Bandwidth Meter link. As the documentation suggests, your results will vary, depending on your setup. Figure A shows the speed I got from my office at TechRepublic at 8:12 A.M., and Figure B shows the result of the same test just a few minutes later. (We connect via a T1.)

Figure A
I received this result when I tested the bandwidth speed from my office at TechRepublic.

Figure B
My connection was slightly slower a few minutes after the first test.
