Caroline Serfass was appointed VP IT international at medical technology organisation Medtronic in May 2010.

She joined the organisation at a time when global growth is top of its agenda, with IT seen as key to achieving that goal.

Before joining Medtronic, Serfass was CIO of European operations and global CRM at pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. She spent her time at Eli Lilly working in a variety of functions, with roles ranging from internal audit manager to supply-chain director as well as various positions in IT.

At Eli Lilly, Serfass also led a major change programme involving the creation of a global structure for common processes and the outsourcing of essential services.

She was also a member of Eli Lilly's European senior management team and played a key role in business transformation and changing the profile of IT from service provider to business partner.

Serfass began her career as the first IT manager of a small mining company in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She studied engineering at the Ecole Centrale de Lyon in France and has an MA in robotics from the Ecole Polytechnique de Montréal, Canada.
