CIO 50 2011: David Jack

CIO 50

Job Title : CIO

Organization : thetrainline.com

David Jack joined thetrainline.com in 2009 and oversees the delivery, operation and governance of thetrainline.com's technology infrastructure.

Best known for operating its own train ticketing website, thetrainline.com also supports the online ticket retail systems for many UK rail companies including Virgin Trains and First Great Western. In 2010, the company managed more than £1bn worth of ticket sales.

The company also has a successful B2B operation which partners with travel management businesses who use the company's technology via its proprietary platform.

In a bid to better manage costs, Jack has reduced the number of development and IS sites from five to two, replaced key IT contracts and made changes to systems, products and processes within the organisation.

Jack has also overseen the virtualsation of thetrainline.com's infrastructure and is investing in private cloud and mobile technology.

Before arriving at thetrainline.com, Jack worked for online betting company Betfair where he started as director of engineering before moving to the company's venture capital division. Following this, he became co-founder MD of Lmax, part-owned by Betfair.

Throughout his career, Jack has held a number of CTO and VP roles with start-ups and more established blue-chip businesses, such as Citrix, Novell, SPC and Borland. He still acts as an adviser to Index Ventures and is a non-exec member of AstleyClarke.com alongside his role at thetrainline.com.

Jack believes mentoring across industries and disciplines is a valuable approach for developing skills.
