CIO 50 2011: Mike Sackman

CIO 50

Job Title : CIO

Organization : Mitchells & Butlers

Mike Sackman is CIO of restaurant and pub operator Mitchells & Butlers, which employs 40,000 staff and owns and operates 1,600 businesses - with brands including All Bar One and Harvester.

Sackman joined the company in 2007, with responsibility for business change and technology strategy, programme delivery and IT operational services. He is currently leading a major change programme to support Mitchells & Butlers' strategy of focusing on the growth parts of its business, with the aim of becoming the UK's preferred choice for informal eating and drinking. His change remit covers the entire company, ranging from the modernisation of sales and service interactions with customers, to the transformation of the infrastructure services at the business centre.

The CIO is a maths and computer science graduate with more than 20 years' IT experience working in the retail sphere. He kicked off his career with an 11-year stint at supermarket chain Safeway - starting at IT helpdesk level and working through a traditional development and systems management route to build his experience across the business. After Safeway, he joined home improvement retailer Kingfisher, spending 18 months in the global sourcing area implementing processes and systems into the European operating companies and the Hong Kong sourcing office to enable rapid growth in this area.

Sackman then transferred to a Kingfisher Group company, B&Q, spending the next six years as supply chain systems controller and finally director of IT. At B&Q, he led a number of major projects including large-scale end-to-end stock management and multichannel systems.

Outside work, Sackman enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf, supporting Portsmouth FC and doing a spot of sailing.
