Resumes and cover letters are self-promotional marketing tools that offer potential employers their first look at you and your skills. In the fast-paced world of IT, your resume needs to catch a hiring manager’s eye at first glance.
“You have mere seconds to make an impression,” said Christy Miller of Seattlejobs.org, a nonprofit IT recruiting organization.
If you're looking for a new position or interviewing for a promotion within your organization, take a good look at your resume. It may need revamping. To give you some pointers, TechRepublic has created a download that offers examples of resume makeovers.
We sent three resumes and two cover letters from IT professionals (with personal information omitted) to Seattlejobs.org to be evaluated and edited by the company's recruiters.
The download includes the initial document written by the applicant and the recruiters' revised version. It also includes explanations of the changes Seattlejobs.org made, which include resume-writing tips such as:
- How to emphasize certain skills and de-emphasize others.
- How to describe management experiences.
- How to cut down lengthy resumes.
Seattlejobs.org, founded in 1996, is a recruiting consortium that represents more than 100 high-tech companies in the Pacific Northwest. These companies collaborate to address IT recruiting needs in a noncompetitive environment. Seattlejobs.org represents this combination of forces and provides IT job seekers with access to companies based in the Pacific Northwest.
According to Harrie Anne Kessler of Seattlejobs.org, an effective resume or cover letter should include:
- A display of your experience that entices potential employers to learn more about you.
- A strong focus.
- Well-organized, well-written, and concise descriptions of your work.
The download will also help you isolate what elements of a resume are most important and what you should focus on in your own resume.
