Opera has created a new search engine letting web developers discover how web pages are structured.

Metadata Analysis and Mining Application (MAMA) search engine will allow web developers to find where certain features and functions have been used and collect data to analyse and discover trends.

In a press release, Opera said MAMA will help answer general questions such as "how many sites use CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)?" and will strive to answer more complex ones such as "how prevalent is Web 2.0?".

This will be made possible by indexing the code, style and technology behind web pages.

According to Opera, in addition to helping and inspiring web developers, MAMA will also hopefully drive browser makers and standards bodies to take developers' suggestions on board, which will in turn improve the quality of the web.

The new search engine will be released publicly in the forthcoming months.
