Pop Quiz: What's interrupting my scheduled defrag?

TechRepublic passport owner Jerald Trexler schedules the defrag procedure under Windows 98, but it always gets interrupted. If you know how to prevent defrag from crashing, you could win a Fatbrain gift certificate worth $25.

TechRepublic passport owner Jerald Trexler submitted the topic for this week’s quiz. If you know the solution, please submit your solution no later than Friday, Feb. 11, 2000.
If you can answer Jerald’s question, you could win a $25 gift certificate to Fatbrain, one of TechRepublic’s e-commerce partners. If more than one person submits the correct solution, we’ll put those names in a hat and select the winner at random.
The situation:
Here’s the e-mail I received from Jerald: “I have regularly scheduled defrag under Windows 98, but it's always interrupted by some program that accesses the hard drive. It's not someone on the computer, because I schedule it during the early morning hours, and I'm too old to stay up that late! Any suggestions?”

The challenge:
If you or your users have experienced this problem and you think you know what’s causing it and how to resolve it, submit your answerno later than Friday, Feb. 11, 2000. We’ll let Jerald help us select the best answer or answers, and we’ll award a $25 Fatbrain gift certificate to one lucky reader.
By submitting your answer, you agree to let TechRepublic publish your solution on its Web site. You also agree that TechRepublic may adapt and edit and authorize the adaptation and editing of each submission as it deems desirable. TechRepublic may or may not publish a submission at its sole discretion.
