Windows XP sets the default size of the Recycle Bin to a value that is 10 percent of the size of the hard disk. As a result, files you may no longer need can take up an enormous amount of hard disk space—especially when you're talking about hundreds of gigabytes. You can help keep your PC clean by reducing the size of the Recycle Bin. Here's how:

  1. Right-click the Recycle Bin and select Properties.
  2. In the Recycle Bin Properties dialog box, you can reduce the amount of disk space the Recycle Bin uses by dragging the slider down the scale.

Note: This tip applies to both Windows XP Home and Professional editions.
