Sun quiet on Aussie layoffs

A spokesperson for Sun Microsystems was today unable to provide details of how the company's plan to reduce its global workforce by up to 2,500 employees would affect its Australian operations.

Earlier this morning, Sun served approximately 1,000 lay-off notifications to employees across Canada and the US. The company stated that additional lay-offs would occur throughout Sun's international operations in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

In a statement, Sun claimed that every part of the company's staffing was evaluated and reductions were made across all levels, including vice presidents and directors.

Word of the lay-offs spread quickly, with numerous Sun employees blogging about their termination.

Sun hopes that the lay-offs save the company up to US$150 million annually.
