Tech Tip: Disable attribute replication from Exchange 5.5 to Active Directory

Follow these steps to prevent Exchange 5.5 directory attributes from replicating to Active Directory.

The Active Directory Connector (ADC) replicates and synchronizes the Exchange Server 5.5 directory with Active Directory. By default, the ADC replicates all Exchange 5.5 directory attributes to Active Directory.

In some cases, however, you might want to prevent an attribute from replicating. For example, if your company recently merged with another company and your employee numbers changed, you might not want to replicate the Exchange 5.5 Employee Number directory attribute to Active Directory.

To prevent Exchange 5.5 directory attributes from replicating to Active Directory, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Active Directory Connector Management properties in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
  2. On the From Exchange tab, deselect the check box next to the attribute for which you want to disable replication.
  3. Click OK.

Be very careful when disabling attribute replication. Some attributes require replication in order for the ADC to function properly. If you're in doubt about the necessity of a particular property, contact Microsoft Product Support Services.
