Tech Tip: Enable the CD-burning service

Like Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 includes the ability to burn CDs without adding additional software. However, this feature isn't enabled by default. Here's how to start the service:

  1. Go to Start | Administrative Tools | Services.
  2. Right-click IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service, and choose Properties.
  3. Change the Startup Type to Automatic.
  4. Select Start, and click OK.

This instructs the server to start the service automatically upon a reboot, but it won't start it for this session, which is why you must also click the Start button.

To burn files to a CD-R or CD-RW on the server, individually select the desired files and/or folders and drag them to the CD burner device. Right-click the device, and choose Write These Files To CD. If you change your mind about burning the CD, right-click the device and choose Delete Temporary Files, which will empty the burn queue.
