Tech Tip: Enhance group policy management

The Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) is a new console available for Windows Server 2003 that centralizes all group policy management functions. Providing such functions as backup and restore of group policy objects, import and export capability of group policy objects, and resultant set of policy reporting, GPMC combines group policy functions from a number of tools, including Active Directory Users and Computers, Active Directory Sites and Services, the Resultant Set of Policy snap-in, and the Delegation Wizard.

GPMC eliminates the need to remember which utility does what. You can manage both Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 domain controllers with GPMC, but you must install the console on either Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP SP1 with XP QFE Q326469. You must also have the .NET Framework installed.

GPMC is available for download from Microsoft's Web site. The filename is Gpmc.msi.

Start the installation by double-clicking the file. Installation is quick and easy, and it includes only a couple of screens, including a license agreement.

After installation, you can start GPMC by going to Start | Administrative Tools | Group Policy Management.
