Tech Tip: Export data from Administrative Tools

In Windows Server 2003, you can export the table view of data for most Administrative Tools to a tab-delimited .txt file or a comma-delimited .cvs file. You can then import this file into other applications, such as Excel.

Follow these steps to export a list of users from Active Directory Users And Computers:

  1. From the Administrative Tools folder, open Active Directory Users And Computers.
  2. Browse to the Users organizational unit.
  3. From the Action menu, choose Export List.
  4. Provide a name and location for the exported file, and choose the type of file you need—either a tab-delimited .txt file or a comma-delimited .csv file.

In addition, you can easily narrow down the list of information in certain tools that are exported to make it easier to manipulate. Here's how:

  1. From the Administrative Tools folder, open Active Directory Users And Computers.
  2. Browse to the Users container.
  3. Click the filter icon on the toolbar to show the Filter Options.
  4. If you want to export just a list of users, choose Show Only The Following Types Of Objects.
  5. Select Users, and click OK.
