Many administrators strive for consistency across their servers. While accomplishing this is difficult in large environments, there are some steps you can take to maintain a consistent desktop across all servers.
For example, you can lock the desktop so changes can't be made in icon and taskbar placement. Follow these steps:
- Start the Registry Editor (Regedit or Regedt32).
- Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer.
- Create a new DWORD value named NoSaveSettings with a value of 1.
- Exit the Registry Editor, and reboot the server.
If you need to change or add an icon or modify the taskbar, open the Registry Editor and give NoSaveSettings a value of 0. This will allow you to make the change. When you're finished, go back and set the value to 1.
Note: Editing the registry is risky, so be sure you have a verified backup before making any changes.
