Tech Tip: Keep the server console consistent

Many administrators strive for consistency across their servers. While accomplishing this is difficult in large environments, there are some steps you can take to maintain a consistent desktop across all servers.

For example, you can lock the desktop so changes can't be made in icon and taskbar placement. Follow these steps:

  1. Start the Registry Editor (Regedit or Regedt32).
  2. Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer.
  3. Create a new DWORD value named NoSaveSettings with a value of 1.
  4. Exit the Registry Editor, and reboot the server.

If you need to change or add an icon or modify the taskbar, open the Registry Editor and give NoSaveSettings a value of 0. This will allow you to make the change. When you're finished, go back and set the value to 1.

Note: Editing the registry is risky, so be sure you have a verified backup before making any changes.
