When deploying Outlook 2003 clients in an Exchange 5.5 organization, you may experience problems with intermittent information store crashes and Dr. Watson errors. The event in the Application log is similar to the following:

Event ID: 4097
Source: Dr. Watson
Description: The application, exe\store.dbg, generated an application error. The error occurred on 6/20/2004 @ 12:27:24.416. The exception generated was c0000005 at address 0042456d (EcDSDNFromSz).

The problem occurs when Outlook 2003 clients either modify or import rules from an Exchange 5.5 mailbox. A bug exists in Outlook 2003 that may corrupt the server-side rule, causing the information store to crash when the rule is processed.

Microsoft has released a hot fix for this issue. If you're experiencing these problems, download the hot fix from Microsoft's Web site.

Please note that you must have already installed Exchange 5.5 Service Pack 4 to take advantage of this hot fix. In addition, remember that, as with most hot fixes, you should apply this hot fix only if you're experiencing these specific symptoms.
