The "training room" at TelephonyWorld.com

If your company is responsible for telephony training in any way, here's a Web site for you. Kevin Eikenberry reviews the site and shares some of the site's training tools that range from tips to tutorials and other useful resources.

You are the new training manager for a telephony company. You know the training business inside and out and are confident in your training skills, but the telephony industry is new to you. And, given the amount of work your new boss has handed you, you need to get up to speed fast!

If you’d like to learn a little, or a lot, about telephony, be sure to check this week’s site in review. TelephonyWorld.com is designed as a portal for telephony, the topic of the growing convergence of voice and data. This Web site offers a section called the Training Room that is especially useful for trainers.

Training room
The Training Room features three main sections:
  • New Weekly Tips to Help You Succeed
  • Tutorials and White Papers
  • Third Party Training and Education

Weekly tips
This section is probably the most useful to the widest variety of training professionals looking to learn more about telephony. Here, you will find:
  • Internet Telephony Tips
  • Telephony Installation Tips

Both sections appear to be updated at least weekly and are full of useful information. Each section is written in a Q&A format, so you can find the information that’s important to you.

Tutorials and White Papers
The Tutorials and White Papers section is pretty technical even for this already technical topic. The titles of some of the items in this section prove it! These documents are very good resources if you’re looking for detailed data on these specific areas. Some current examples include:
  • Understanding Latency in IP Telephony
  • Implementing Fax Relay over Packet Networks
  • NetCoder Voice Quality Test Results from COMSAT

I found one article in this list that might have broader appeal for trainers. If your job requires you to travel with your laptop to countries where the phone standards are different, I highly recommend that you read “Making Modems Work Overseas.” This well-written article tells you what you need to know without trying to sell you anything!

Third Party Training and Education
This section features mostly a set of links from what appears to be advertisers or partners in the larger site. Each link is annotated, so you at least have some idea of where you are going. The links also open into a new browser window, which allows you to keep track of where you are overall. One of the links that caught my eye, as a possible find for trainers, was the MasteryPOINT Learning System , which has a set of CBT courses available on a variety of communications and telephony topics.

Overall impressions
This site is not going to make you a better trainer or solve all your departments’ training problems. What it does provide is in-depth background on telephony as well as high-quality content. So, consider TelephonyWorld to be your subject matter expert (SME) on telephony. Like most SMEs, it won’t be able to answer all of your questions, but it will be a big help with some.

I’d like to find more sites that assist trainers and training departments in the areas of telephony, training documentation, and business etiquette. If you have one you’d like to recommend, please let us know so we can review it in the coming weeks. Please post your recommendations at the bottom of this page or send Kevin a note .
