Google Voice lands as native iPhone app

Google Voice has finally hit Apple's App Store for the iPhone after 16 months of waiting, the company said.

As a brief recap, Google wanted Google Voice in the App Store. Apple rebuffed it. The FCC got interested. Then Google did an HTML5 Web app for the iPhone. While this scrum was underway Google Voice ran as a native app on Android and BlackBerry devices.

Now Google Voice fans will get a native app.

The feature set will look very familiar. Free text messaging, voicemail transcription and your caller ID associated with Google Voice. Google in a blog post said that it will also feature push notifications and direct access numbers in the native app.

This would be great if you could talk over Wi-Fi and make calls from GV. . . I'm guessing Apple had them remove this.

This is an app that allows you to use your phone as ... a phone? Their web site, in typical Google lean fashion, isn't very informative. What's all the hubbub, bub?

Would be great if google expands free calls beyond US and Canada. Until then here is a hack. Go to http://www.callarc.com register and get a local access number. Call the access number from GV and place free international calls.:-) works for me. Talk for as much as you like for free. This is great, i will be saving over 400 a month in long distance calls. ATT is not pleased at all:-)

I use Google Voice on my Android phone... it offers a bunch of features. I have a Google Voice number, different than my cell number, even a different area code if I want it. I use this as my business number; it'll ring on my cell and home office line, I can pick up either. It does voicemail, which is sent to my phone as an audio file, but also as a text message or email. The voice to text is decent for good quality calls. There are also cheap calling options, i haven't used these. At least on Android, i can dial out via Google Voice.. still over cellular, but not bypassing Verizon for USA calls. The SMS messaging does bypass your own phone's messaging... worth considering if you pay extra for messaging on your phone plan.

I use it to keep my personal and business voice and text lives separate, but with one device, the iPhone. When I switch jobs, my personal number never changes and friends and family are none the wiser. Additionally I've avoided costly cell plans having a iPhone that is not activated but fully functional as a phone via WiFi using Skype & GV. While in between work I can use a cheap plan (now Virgin's $25/month) to maintain coverage and again, same number. I was hoping this would be a bit more functional than the HTML5 version, but so far, not really.

I can't seem to make calls using the GV app solely on WIFI. Skype seems to be the preferred app for that still.

I thought Skype was a PC application. Why would you need an application to make phone calls from your phone?

Its handy because unless you have unlimited plans, you get charged for minutes, whereas if you have free wifi somewhere, you can make a Skype/Google Voice call without charge(to another user of the same app). Now I see from the website that you can make calls to phones as well but there is a charge. Not sure how that would work economically.

And then on the receiving end, reads the text back out. Basically its voicemail, but without having to hear the person talk. We've gone full circle there. And now we have with google voice.
