Will Android get a root store?

CyanogenMod mulls whether it should take the next step and create an app store for root apps.

One of the doyens of the Android modification and ROM world, Koushik Dutta, is proposing that CyanogenMod gets its own app store.

"We need an app store for root apps. We also need an app store for apps that are getting shut down for no good reason, other than carrier, or some random corporation doesn't like it," wrote Dutta on Google+.

Dutta cited one-click root apps, emulators, visual voicemail and tether apps as examples of applications that would have a home within the new store. Having a user base for the new store would be a non-issue, as CyanogenMod is about to pass 1 million unique, active user installs.

Money from the app store would go towards funding the CyanogenMod project.

Dutta wrote that he had approached Amazon about starting a partnership with its Appstore if CyanogenMod received a cut of the sales, but was brushed off.

At the time of writing, over 300 responses had been received to Dutta's proposal, the overwhelming majority of which were positive.
