What's the first thing you do when you get into the office?

A reader recently posted a question on Slashdot recently asking others how they would answer the interview question "What's the first thing you do when you get to work in the morning?" The poster asks IT managers to answer that question to find out what Web sites or tools they look at or use the first thing. So let's give it a shot here. I'll start:I start by googling Paris Hilton. I'm worried sick about that girl.

OK, just having some fun there. Of course, I log on to TechRepublic first thing. Really, I do. But then, I work here so that pretty much makes sense. I'll let you guys take it from here. What's the first thing you do when you get in the office-aside from getting coffee? Click here to let us know.

You're right with the coffee, if it's early, I have to make it but arriving late does improve my efficiency as some one else has usually fired up big bertha (our 12 cup percolator) and hot coffee is already brewed. Apart from that, I check auto generated system emails to see what has broken silently overnight, scan our various web based event systems to see whether the manufacturing plants have been delayed or impacted by the automation systems and then settle in to whatever I was working on the previous evening when I left for home (assuming that some emergency has not resulted in me staying at work all night, in which case I may have had a few too many coffees and a toilet break may be required).

The recent rains in Texas have led to flooding in the building that I work in. The first thing I do when I get in is find some space with a network connection that I can set up a laptop (my PC is disassembled and on a shelf in the closet. :( ) for the day. Some day soon, the maintenance crew will finish repairing the flood damage to my office and I will be able "to go home again." :)

Check email and call tickets to see what's going on. Log in to various programs, and then switch out backup tapes.

I open my Outlook and find out what managers have sent me what, but I read my technology horoscope first.

I love this when I get it as an interview question. My routine: (I make it as consistent as possible: my users know where to find me then) I say good morning, how are you? to everybody i see on way in. I yell 'thanks whoever made the coffee' over my shoulder (or i make it) and get a cup. I ask backup operator how backups went. then I check backups personally. (she knows I check them too). I login to all our servers. I check event logs. then back out. i would do this all from my desk normally but in this particular job I wander. because it is a small network and I am a communications freak (really, i am much nicer in person. honest.) Then I pull up email, glance at voice mail. Open browser to company webpage, which I maintain, to make sure still up. Then I wander with the coffee and pad and pencil around office visiting. first visit to boss if there. next visit to anybody with hot email or voice mail. subsequent visits to folks who had questions or issues previous day. (howz it goin'? what'cha workin on? anything we can do for you? everything workin' the way you want? sip. sip.) while visiting I get the news of the day: i ask for geek news from able young buck assistant (sorry, it is sexist, forgive me). I ask for local (community) news from the office gossip. she knows I will say 'mmmm' and wander away quietly if she starts yakking about fellow workers. so she mostly doesn't. I ask boss for world news, stock market news, company news. I ask receptionist for who is coming out today to visit us, who is going where to what customer, what quotes are out there, whatever I can think up. my users are all accustomed to my routine and usually are ready with the good tidbits of the day. because the users are in the habit of being asked how is it going pretty much every morning, they often will wait politely and save telling me about them until they see me wander over. (when they do this I reward as much as possible with quick action, immediate resolution if I can, lots of attention) then more coffee, back to desk. check to-do list from previous day. do that stuff. put more stuff on list. after all that coffee, I go pee. in between, I play on tech republic while on hold or waiting for format etc (if you believe that I have very nice diamond ring for sale)

I read this daily blog on computerworld.com because anything that happens to me during the day is probably better than what happened on there!
