The CIO of Europe's second largest steel manufacturer Corus has left the business after six years at the helm of its technology operations.

Bruno Laquet will join international exams group Cambridge Assessment as group CIO on 1 May, where he will be responsible for information management systems and logistics across more than 150 countries.

Laquet joined Corus as group CIO in 2004. During his time there he oversaw a major technology transformation project aimed at standardising business processes onto an SAP software platform. The first phase of this was completed in April this year and covered HR, finance, procurement and engineering business processes. The second phase will address the company's global supply chain.

Laquet also moved the company to a multi-sourcing approach following the end of a 10-year outsourcing contract with Capgemini which covered infrastructure and application maintenance in the UK. The original deal was struck by British Steel in 1998 - Corus was formed when British Steel and Koninklijke Hoogovens merged in 1999.

After the Capgemini contract expired in 2008, Laquet split the outsourced services into several service lines - mainframe data, PC support, application maintenance, service management - some of which was outsourced to several suppliers and some was in-sourced.

Corus won't be hiring a direct replacement for Laquet as the Corus IT operations have been consolidated into Tata Steel Group, led by head of IT Shreekant Mokashi in India. There are however plans to appoint a deputy CIO for Europe.
