France launches 'War on Spam'

The French government's Office for the Media Development has recently launched ‘Signal Spam’ which is a public/private initiative to increase public awareness of spam, monitor spamming activities and generate blacklists to block spammers.

Although the service doesn't seem to be fully operational just yet, French-Law.net reports on what can be expected.  Internet users will be able to report spam in one of two ways.  The simplest way is to paste offending email content in to a web form and submit it.  French speaking Internet users will be able to register and install a plug-in available for both Outlook (2003/2007) or Thunderbird.  Unsolicited junk mail can then be submitted to Signal Spam at the click of a button.  It’s thought that integration with webmail clients such as Hotmail and Gmail may be a possibility in the near future.

In addition to this active spam fighting the website offers Internet users helpful advice on avoiding spam and useful links to anti-spam software and other anti-spam projects.

Yay!!! Tho I'm sure they will withdraw and surrender shortly as they prefer to do biz with the evil axis of spammers, making money selling them nuclear powered battery backups for their spam servers. Or spammers will threaten to fire their student intern employess, starting a riot and threaten to not send out French language spam. They will end up with a subsidy from the French govt, being PAID to spam like the french university students are PAID to be students. This is in comparison to what the US would do if we declared "War on Spam": The US will setup a "Department of Homeland Spam Security". US warships and planes will for years bombard trailer parks near Tampa FL to flush out the evil King of Spam, before sending special sysop commandos in, disguised as 'Geek Squad' personnel, in huge fleets of armored black and white new-beetles. We will allocate hundreds of billions in money we don't have to fight a war we can't win because the Spamsurgents and Spamofascists will publish videos of the destruction of DOHSS servers and hold them for ransom, encrypting the contents in exchange for e-Gold payments. Max will loudly proclaim here on TR in a discussion that we DID NOT torture the spammers we jail, when it is revealed in Newsweek, shortly before the Pentagon reveals that we DID TORTURE them to get a confession. This will spark riots in the Miami and Tampa spam centers, with some spammers killing each other by accident as they protest the police state coming down in Florida, and they fire the guns they are allowed to carry concealed in Florida. WOW! Now I feel like Nostradamus. I also predict that at least one humorless person will tell me to keep my politics out of TR when I really was just trying to see the lighter side of it all :)

It won't make any difference; the French haven't won a war in the last hundred years.

That EVERY congresscritter will vote to support the war on spam, but later down the road, they will say they were lied to, there was faulty intelligence, and the DOHSS will get dumped on because they didn't respond fast enough to the crisis when margaritaville ran out of tequila.

...then launch a band of blue ribbon comissions which will ultimately conclude that there is no spam threat. Following the report by the comission, it will be revealed that several members of the comission have significant contributions made to their campaigns by known spammers.

To protect the freedom of speach of the spammers, in all actuality... to protect the legislators from being prosecuted for receiving donations from criminals. Dan

is that in a poll of English people, they list France as the place they'd rather retire to. Silly as it sounds, I might like to also! So the socialist utopia is working? as long as you aren't a kid trying to find work. And while I see reasons for the US to be global policeman, I am glad that there are countries that can say they want to stay peaceful and not do this.
