Windows XP Service Pack 3 provides updated WPA2 support

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) was recently released as a critical update to Windows XP systems. This update is welcome in that there is still an investment in core updates with the popular operating system compared to Windows Vista, but it will probably be the last service pack style update with core feature additions. Among the network-related features is an update to the XP implementation of the Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) wireless networking standard. This update brings XP's wireless networking support up to the June 12, 2007, specification level of WPA2 at IEEE 802.11i, which focuses on wireless medium access control (MAC) and physical layer specifications.

Support for WPA2 started in 2005 to replace wired equivalent privacy (WEP) functionality, but it has not been updated since then with changes to the WPA2 standard. XP3 is defined as a critical update, and it may arrive on your network before a planned update is launched if your users use the Windows Update site independently. Among other networking updates, SP3 also gives formal support for Microsoft's network access protection implementation as well as simplified IPSec policy creation and maintenance.

The Windows XP SP3 overview document explaining the additional WPA2 support and other related features can be found at the Microsoft website.

After being in the IT industry for over thirty (30) years, I have learn to wait ... Pioneers are the one's that get arrows in their backs ... I will research XP Service Pack 3 and wait until all of the pioneers have pulled all of the arrows out their backs ... and pray for the one's that could not remove the arrows:)

Beware! XP SP3 has issues installing to your computer if your computer is an HP with an AMD processor. Read these links first before you install it. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=xp+sp3+HP+AMD+installation+problems

To All. After installing XP SP3 on HP DV1000, I started to have usb power issues. Hotfix from Microsoft didn't help. More frequent now. Power to usb goes off and on intermittently. Very annoying. Anyone have a fail safe solution? Ciao, Michael

Hi Sharrah, This may be related to HP and AMD but not sure. Check it out. http://www.hpnotebookclassaction.com/index.html Home View Other Cases Submit A Complaint Contact Us Disclaimer HP Pavilion Notebook Class Action Welcome to Shepherd, Finkelman, Miller & Shah, LLC?s (?SFMS?) website for its investigation of HP Pavilion Notebooks. SFMS is currently investigating allegations that certain HP Pavilion Notebooks, including the DV1000 series, are experiencing serious problems. If the computer is used for any length of time, it appears that the bottom becomes very hot and the unit shuts down. Attempts to update the BIOS also are not successful and many consumers are apparently being told that the system board is faulty. Other consumers report problems related to poorly designed solder joints on the DC jack. The resulting problems include situations where the electrical and battery icons switch back and forth even though the computer is plugged in and the notebook spontaneously powers down (especially when the AC power adapter plug is moved). If you own an HP Pavilion Notebook and are experiencing any of the problems mentioned above or any problems that you believe to be related, please contact us through this link. That's why I like waiting until the bugs have been worked out, even though sometimes even waiting does not guarantee a headache less installation.

I installed SP3 on 2 systems allready. My old PC(a gateway) had no problem(it's running an ssh server from cygwin) but then aggain it was recently reformatted. My laptop is an HP with an amd processor... I had no problem... I guess it may depend on other factors also. (Note: I also did not have anny problem while installing... even if I had NOD2's daemon running)

Yep, like they say, "Early bird gets the worm." Hmm.... In this case might be a "bug".
