Behold- The singing Tesla coil!

Building a huge solid-state Tesla coil: Cool.

Tweaking that Tesla coil to play music: Awesome.

Playing the Bowser-fight Super Mario Brothers music on your singing Tesla coil: Legendary.

It's even more entertaining to watch the guy dancing in the reflection!

One of the greatest inventors that has ever lived. Were he still living today, I'm sure we would see things much more cool than the singing coil!

Way way back in the sixties, my high school class built a Tesla coil that stood 6 feet tall. The primary winding had ten turns and the secondary coil have more than two million. We used a huge tube type amplifier to get almost 80 volts AC, the frequency dependant upon the input to the amplifier. When we fed music into it, it hardly worked but it really started cooking when we upped the bass. We had to cover the wall switches and outlets as it was blowing fuses when the arc reached out to them. Stategic placement of welding curtains solved that problem and it really was starved for a target. Tossing an aluminum foil wrapped basketball into the field drew some huge arcs and some viewers even had flash burns on the retina. We established a ground inside the field to draw a continuous arc and then fed the music in. Not only did the arc dance to the music but the colors of the arc changed too.

While it's certainly cool, it's not a new idea. People were building electric-arc based tweeters in the seventies and eighties.

How, pray tell, does one make a solid-state coil of any kind? Solid-state refers to devices constructed on a chip, like transistors and ICs.

otherwise it would be pretty hard to modulate some audio on it. The original Tesla-coil had a mechanical or discharge breaker. T
