Looking for a few good books

I'm nearing the end of my epic struggle with Iron Sunrise by Charles Stross

(no fault of the book, I just haven't made time to read). Since I still

have time to make out Christmas lists, I was hoping some of my regulars

could post a "one book you must read" suggestion.

You can go ahead and skip anything else by the esteemed Mr. Stross, I

already want his entire bibliography. I've also already requested Old Man's War by John Scalzi and Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom by Cory Doctorow (of BoingBoing

fame), so you can skip that too. Also, no Harry Potter suggestions,

please. My wife has the entire collection, and I'm just oppositional

enough that I don't want to read these things while they're so

"establishment."

Instead, I'm looking for that one book that as soon as you finished it

you rushed out to tell all your friends they had to read it as well.

History, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, biography, whatever--I'm just looking

for a few good books.
