Peruse the night sky with a map of the universe

Takeaway: In the past eight years, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey has taken a staggering number of images of our night sky. A TechRepublic gallery features some of the images from the SDSS 3D map of the universe.

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has created a 3D map of the universe that covers more than a quarter of our night sky. In the 3D map, there are more than one million galaxies and a mind-blowing number of stars. The 138 megapixel imaging detector on the telescope (which is 2.5 meters in diameter) has done all it can do for the time being, but astronomers at the SDSS still have plenty of work ahead of them to use the 3D map to find the secrets of the universe.
