After Hours

Poll: Who is the geekiest TV character?

Star Trek: TNG's Data, The Big Bang Theory's Sheldon, and M*A*S*H's Radar are all geeky, but which fictional TV character is the geekiest of them all?

Who do you think is the geekiest TV character, past or present? We're looking for fictional characters (humans and non-humans) rather than, say, the folks from MythBusters. We're particularly leaning toward the tech/science nerds rather than the Steve Urkel from Family Matters type of character, although feel free to make a case if you think the non-tech geek should be in the running too.

With the help of TechRepublic editors Selena Frye, Mark Kaelin, and Bill Detwiler, here are a few options to get the ball rolling.

There are lots of geeky characters (think of all the Joss Whedon shows alone) that aren't represented here, so please take the poll and then join in the discussion.

The car from Knight Rider is basically Data in an automobile shell.

While Sheldon is waaaaaay uber-geek, I think Dr. Reid could definitely give him a run for his money because he exudes the geek "naturally" (meaning no sci-fi fanboy, no tech fanboy, etc). He just *is* "geek".

He lived the geek dream!!! married his computer, conquered the world, taught the world how to love, created giant kittens, and could get dressed in 6 seconds flat - all that with a great sense of humour to boot.

Dr. Who, especially Tom Baker and David Tennant--Thanks for adding him!!

I voted for Sheldon, but Moss would have been my 2nd Choice

I would throw in Sherlock Holmes (as played by Jeremy Brett).

How about Dr Spencer Reed from Criminal Minds? He's got to be on the list if not the ultimate prize winner...

Maurice Moss from The IT Crowd is not bad too !

Q. Who, from TechRepublic's readers, is the neerdiest? I vote for the first guy/gal who didn't have to Google any of the names in this poll's list.

How about "Brains" from the mid-1960's BBC import "Thunderbirds Are Go!"?

Radar from MASH did not start out as geeky. He started out as a canny operator who knew how to get things done, and wasn't above nipping a bit of the Colonel's whiskey. The geeky characterization came later.

Penelope Garcia from Criminal Minds - have you ever seen her do her thing with the computer keyboard??

You should have thought of Charlie Epps on Numb3rs. Geeky, brilliant, lovable!

The geekiest TV character has got to be Professor Frink from The Simpsons Glaaaavin!

Seven of Nine from Star Trek played by Jeri Ryan is the purest sort of geek hero.

I think Fargo from Eureka is right behind Sheldon Cooper.

In reality Data is but a lot of people don't know who he is. Data is a machine so how could it not be the geekiest! Sheldon in this day and age is the current "Geekster". haha!

You forgot about Lazlo Hollyfield from the 1985 movie Real Genius who lived in a closet leading to a basement lab.

I think that Sheldon Cooper and Dr. Rodney McKay are a tie. Some discussion about geeky vs nerdy should ensue to help break the tie.

Bill Nye, the science guy. (Hence my 'other' vote) c'mon Stereotypical geek. :) Really liked to watch his show though.

How do you miss Chloe O'Brien, who single-handedly out-geeked the whole of CTU for her entire career? Also...Dr. Bonnie Barstow, who kept KITT running strong in the old Knight Rider series. My disappointment in this list is great.

Dr Who is never going to come close to winning a geek award, he's just not that, well geeky. MacGyver for Geek Coolest Under Pressure And ff the Mac makes the list then the A-Team is there for the Geek Group Coolest Under Pressure!

He is the living definition of a geek.

I would have to split my vote between Moss and Sheldon (like an English vs American geek). I wouldn't count MacGyver as he's got too many friends to be a geek...

Eureka has geeks in every corner. Close your eyes, spin around and point. Open yoiur eyes and you'll be pointing at a geek.

Wowee, thanks for the link. We have the Venn Diagram, printed in color(!), proudly posted in our office. No longer do I have to explain why nerds are not the same as geeks. Those of us who ARE geeks get tired of explaining the obvious to non-geeks.

I'd pick Daniel Jackson, or even Samantha Carter over Rodney McKay.

And what about Seven-of-Nine?

clicked that one... though I was tossing up between him and Radar. When I saw Radar's name... I couldn't help but chuckle out loud.

I would have had to look up that guy from Numb3rs, at the very least, as mentioned by boxfiddler. And at least 3 from the original poll, from shows I never watch. I'm certainly not the geekiest anyway, but did recently manage to get fBSD8 to install from a flash drive. I'm sure a true geek could have found a solution much more quickly, as well as figuring out how to get a fairly full install of Debian from a flash drive as well. :p

Both know how to kick ass, Sam more than Daniel, but still, McKay is just a weakling.

She was more of a warrior than a scientist and extremely hot. The only techie in her was put there by the borg.

I do not think Radar was a Geek......he was a Iowa Farm boy from 1940-50's.....before all this technology. He was a childish man who still believe in virtues, honesty, love of animals and fellow man. Soory his inclusion on this list..makes no sense.

jody.burton
jody.burton

mostly because of situation. With Sheldon and his compatriots, we are expecting geek to the nth degree. Radar was the embodiment of people plucked from everyday life and put in an environment with some very grim issues. Yet I suspect he largely remained what he was in civilian life, but with a very brave face. Sheldon would probably be crouched in a corner the entire series (no disrespect intended...BAZINGA!).
