The top 10 schools in sci-fi and fantasy (and their awesome fake alumni gear)

Just in time for back to school season, we break down the 10 ten sci-fi & fantasy institutes of education worthy of claiming you attended (by way of IRL-available merchandise).
10. PS238 Public School 238 is home to the Rainmaker Program, the U.S. government's project to understand the basis of superpowers -- by "educating" the elementary school-aged children of superheroes and villains. Your PS238 lunchbox better be bulletproof. 9. Smallville High Yes, this is Superman's Superboy's Clark Kent's alma mater, which is all the excuse you need to sport a Smallville High athletics shirt. (Warning: Wearing said shirt may increase your chances of meteor rock mutation and/or supervillainy.) T shirt8. Empire State University

Any alumni registry that includes Dr. Doom, Reed Richards, Emma Frost, and Peter Parker is one you'll proudly name-drop. At least until the next Skrull invasion.

7. Sunnydale High

How many people can claim they went to high school with the Slayer before the campus was consumed in the implosion of the Hellmouth? I mean, how many surviving people can claim that?

6. Miskatonic University

So much to be proud of from this isolated New England gem, from its unparalleled library of the occult to its extensive faculty knowledge of the Elder Gods to the only medical school with an accredited specialty in human re-animation. Go 'Pods!

5. I.F. Battle School

This military academy may have its critics, many of them Battle School alumni, but any organization that produced Ender "Xenocide" Wiggin is one that's due its share of respect. In darkness, therefore we will fight!

4. Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters

The only downside to attending the most exclusive school in the Marvel universe is that you have to be "the right kind of people" (read: mutants) to attend, and the only school sports team is a paramilitary strike force trained to defend a world that hates and fears you. But the class reunions are awesome.

3. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Yes, it has all the tedious downsides of an English boarding school with the additional inconvenience of placing you in the crosshairs of He Who Shall Not Be Named. But you get to play Quidditch. Enough said.

2. Starfleet Academy

To graduate, you have to pass the Kobayashi Maru test. And then, they put you on a starship, which is awesome, so long as the shirt you're wearing isn't, you know, red. Fascinating.

1. The Jedi Praxeum

Bottom line, they teach you superpowers, give you a lightsaber, and encourage you to quote Yoda. Win.

Think we missed an awesome sci-fi fantasy school, or want to debate the rankings of our list? The principal will see you in the comments section.

How about Streeling University on the Galactic Empires homeworld, Trantor. This is the "psychohistory" mathematician, Hari Seldons alma mater from the Asimov "Foundation" series.

Okay, you have to be part of the breeding cult to get in, but who doesn't want to learn telekinesis well enough to be able to beat up a transgenic (at least until she flashes you)

Only one worth mentioning in the entire list. Who's up for learning ecology from Hiroko, and Physics from Saxifrage.

I liked the futuristic arena football and the civics teacher, although the high school gets flattened by a Klendathu boulder. Maybe the school's spirit shirt could read "Kills bugs dead".

I always thought that it would have been a favorite of lawyers and such. Possibly future politicians.

Seems like we should include Unseen University. Discworld has too many great graduates to even try listing them.

Saganami Island, home of the Royal Manticoran Naval Academy -and "The Advanced Tactical Course, a/k/a "The Crusher"; David Weber has created a rich universe in his Honor Harrington series, and The Royal Manticoran Navy fan association is recreating it at their own Saganami Island Academy, where we actually are building a curriculum that teaches leadership and management skills. Check it out at www.trmn.org

You really meant games not SciFi or Fantasy right? Since that is most of your list. I stumbled upon http://www.lastexittonowhere.com/ a few months ago. The Banzai Institute, Hill Valley High School plus a host of companies you may enjoy. Now the only problem is explaining to my wife why I need a $25 T-Shirt from Club obi-Wan

...before the Martian colonists established a university. Sax would have been a great teacher, but the must-take course would have been Arkady teaching political science.

...I'm actually not much of a gamer and ALL of these schools come from comic books, webcomics, movies, televisions and or novels. They may have appeared in games, but absolutely didn't originate there. In fact, if you can FIND a good Ender's Game Battle School FPS or old-school platformer, please let me know. The Banzai Institute was a standalone research facility, not a school. They maybe had some lower-tier guys doing post-doc placement there, but this was far from a student facility. Says so right on their website: http://www.banzai-institute.com/0401abot.html I'm VERY familiar with LastExitToNowhere (I've been pining for a Porkchop Express shirt for ages) but other than Hill Valley High School, none of their designs refer to actual schools, and to my mind HVHS doesn't crack the top ten most interesting fictional genre educational institutions.

Both taught in the Martian underground. Arkady was a bit dead at that point.
