What's the worst movie you've seen this year?

Movietome used Metacritic data to compile the list of the 10 worst movies of 2009 so far. Check out the list and then let us know the worst film you've seen this year.

Sometimes it's fun to watch bad movies. I remember seeing Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! in the theater (with the price of admission, you got a packet of tomato seeds) when I was a kid and thinking it was pure silliness, but it was a good time at the movies. In fact, some films reach cult status because of how badly they stink; case in point is the documentary Best Worst Movie about Troll 2.

For a look at this year's cinematic duds, Movietome used Metacritic data to compile the list of the 10 worst movies of 2009 so far. (Movietome and Metacritic are CBS Interactive sites.) Here's the list:

10. Homecoming

9. Spinning Into Butter

8. The Informers

7. Downloading Nancy

6. I Hate Valentine's Day

5. Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li

4. The Lodger

3. All About Steve

2. The Trouble With Romance

1. Miss March

I haven't even heard of most of the films on the list.

The idea of talking about the worst movies of the year so far makes me feel a little bit like Debbie Downer, especially when I know that people put a lot of effort into these projects. Although the argument can be made that, by letting folks know which movies are clunkers, you're saving them time and money. That's how I choose to think about the topic.

The worst movie I've seen in the theater this year is, in my opinion, The Proposal. I know lots of people enjoyed this film, but I found it formulaic, gross, and boring. To be fair, I prefer independent and foreign films to modern romantic comedies, so I didn't have high hopes that I would care for it. One of my relatives really wanted to see it, and I didn't have the guts to say no.

So, what's the worst movie that you've watched this year? Let's open it up to any film and not just ones that came out in 2009 and not necessarily a film you saw in the theater.

I hated Public Enemies. There were movies that were technicly "worse" (legend of Chun-li), but Public enemies failed because it had some moderate issues (notably the inconcistent film quality)and was both uninteresting and long. I have seen street fighter more than once (with alchohol of course) but Public enemies was a complete waste of 3 hours of my life.

Michael Bay doesn't do dialog. No big secret. He's not very big on plot, either (which makes the first 30 or so minutes of 'The Island' confusing in a "was someone else directing while he took a potty break" sort of way). But when Michael Bay doesn't even try with plot or dialog, then mails in the action scenes and throws in a little soft core porn slo-mo action; you get the second Transformers movie. TEAR A BULL!!

I'm tired of movies that are all special effect with no actual plot or that don't make sense. TCB

Absolute crap. Pretty well known cast that was apparently paid a lot of money to ignore the craptastic script and just allow the insipidness to surround them.

by far. the plot was so obvious, the clue discoveries so unreal and illogical, I was dissapointed by the acting of both Tom H. and Ewan McG.. The special effects were a complete disaster ...and so on ...

worst movie ever = burn after reading, more like burn after watching first five minutes.

and only one of those in theater, I'd have to go with the live-action movie: X-Men Origins - Wolverine. Not that it was a bad movie, I enjoyed it when I didn't expect to. It's just the worst of those I've watched this year. Oh, the rest of the list? Finding Nemo, Madagascar (both), Cars, Wall-E, and Monsters vs. Aliens.

District 9 is the most horrid movie I've seen so far this year, without question. I was expecting it to be insightful and thought-provoking, but the only thoughts I could manage were related to how long I could hold out on vomiting. It was so harsh and so grainy and so overly violent that I was literally crying. A movie should make you cry because you empathize with the character or something really terrible happened, not because every few seconds another person explodes.

I agree on Miss March... I expected it to be a good one.. but after i watched... i feel like.. what a waste of time.

I'm thinking this 2012 movie looks like someone left the SFX folks alone too long without supervision...

Bought the DVD when it came out, I'd like to say it was shite but that can be an end product with some utility.

Crash 2...PLease directors make up your minds what genre you're going to use. Crash was a far-out over the top action flick that was enjoyable for that very reason, but please, what is it with the Japanese (Godzilla) theme just thrown in this movie without thought! The movie was already a pale imitation of crash and then you went and totally destroyed it with an out of place piece of classic japanart. Please no Crash 3 if this is the best money can do...

far and away the worst movie i've seen this year (possibly this decade) Antichrist deeply unpleasant - and seriously strange NB - i'd also mention that i watch practically every movie that comes out - and most are at the very least watchable, Antichrist was the first in at least 10 years that i wanted to walk out of, just at 10 others did at the start.

With the cast this movie had, it should have been hilarious. I fast forwarded through it until it got to the part with 13 in it.

I'm sure many will disagree, but I saw ads that promoted it as a political thriller and it turned out to be more of a alien conspiracy gore-fest with more f-words than I have seen in any recent movies.

100% GARBAGE. They took a cheap rip off of Fatal Attraction with some racial pandering thrown in and dumbed it down enough for the average MTV viewer to be able to sit through it and unleashed on the movie theaters. Awful, horrible, bad bad bad. easily the worst movie I've seen in a long time. I got even though, I made my wife sit through District 9 for picking Obsessed on movie night, So I feel we're even now. Even for a Sci Fi geek for me that movie was pretty bad, for her it was nearly unbearable.

How can someone make a movie about the 80's, complete with cocaine and naked hot girls that sucked so bad? Really? Is that the best they could do? I survived the 80's and myself, nor my friends that also survived the 80's could stomach the movie. I rarely criticize a movie, but that one was very blah. I watched it with little expectations, just looking to relax with the girlfriend watching a not too deep movie. Admittedly, we turned it off at 45 minutes in so I can't comment on the entire movie. But my cheap arse paying for it without watching it in its entirety speaks volumes. :)

The worst, by far, is Orphan. This movie was ridiculous and stupid. I know there are many people who like it, but the characters were not well defined. The story had promise, but the execution simply ruined it. What sucks even more is that my wife took me to see the movie on my birthday because I really wanted to see it. Stupid movie. Before that one, it was Borat. Pointless and not funny.

I totally agree with the line-up. especially Street fighter. It was yet another disappointing attempt at one of my all-time favorite fighting games and they blew it yet again.

Ok, since I dont see too many new movies, here it is. the worst movie I saw this year had to be the Terminator show not long ago. However, as for cheesy, Zombieland would rank right up there as well. But Zombieland was hilarious, so it ranks much better in my opinion.

Not stuff that's been out for years like Nemo or Madagascar. Me? I haven't seen any first-run movies this year, although I've seen Casablanca at least twice in 2009.

The events in the film show what was happening to Black South African residents of Soweto (where D9 was shot) in the 70's The violence in the movie is toned down - the military vehicles depicted and the tactics used were real.

Not so much the worst but the most disappointing. Was looking forward to it and thought it was the perfect role for Keanu Reeves but the exection was dreadful.

when some producer sees a film that does well (it's quite clear they only reproduce popular formulas as defined by ticket sales rather than any concept of taste) and thinks 'hey - that went down well. I have a good budget, I'll just do the same thing'. As a result, once a film like Sin City or 300 receives the deserved acclaim, you know films like The Spirit are not far behind. What an overpolished turd of a film. You can tell by watching it that only 10% of the footage is what was shot, the rest being CGI. It's just a shame that they took the same approach with the script, only writing plot for 10% of the film, and relying on overlong confrontations and ridiculous dialogue to bulk it up. And for those who consider Jason Statham reason enough to sit through a Crank sequel (something I'd never watch after seeing the original)... Not even Eva Mendes was hot enough to save The Spirit, although if anyone could have it would have been her.

It sucked hard. But Jason Statham was still hot. So, it gets points for that.

Got the idea of the living conditions, ok. For some if it is a political point and people have come to be entertained you might have to draw a little clearer picture. But the story line stunk. Weapons cool, but so many more things made it a bad movie. Idea wasn't bad the way it was put together just stunk....oh did I say that already? Did you know they banned this in some parts of Africa?

Robbomaz

That cleverly brought what life in Soweto was really like to the big screen. Filmed on location in Soweto as well I lived in SA in the 70's - this movie deserves all the critical acclaim it got

District 9 was so much more than a alien gore fest. It was brilliant

JamesRL
JamesRL

Big Hint, the story was set in South Africa, and that was the only place where they landed, and the only place in the world that ghettoized the aliens. The aliens were treated less than human (like blacks in South Africa). They lived in ghettoes (like blacks in South Africa). They wanted to be free...you get the point. The use of allegory isn't new, think of Gullivers travels, it wasn't about giants and tiny people. I personally enjoyed it. James

Rastor9
Rastor9

I "knew" what they were supposed to be presenting in the movie but the "documentary" on the screen looked more like raw footage without any commentary or editorial viewpoint that you will find about a documentary. Were the film makers "against" the living conditions and treatments or were they "for" them? I also hate the handy cam views, I was getting sick to my stomach, and not from the gore but from the unsteady camera work and grainy video. Why isn't this movie on the list?

The girlfriend and I are off to see that after a few drinks tonight. We're hoping it appeals to both of our sick, twisted senses of humor. I'm not expecting a plot or anything spectacular, just mindless violence and some quick witted humor. It's been a long, stressful week with work and studying for the both of us. Due to that, we sort of don't want an emotionally engaging well thought out plot and wonderfully crafted characters. Just something we can sit back, watch and drool over for an hour or so. I'm hoping for extra cheese more or less... :)

South Africa also banned "The Wall" by Pink Floyd in 1980 so it's no surprise they would also ban a film that cast Joahnesburg in such a poor light. I'm glad someone else mentioned the allegory aspect because I was beginning to think I was the only one who got it. Maybe you would have liked it better had it been set in the US with Americans instead of Dutch decendants. I thought the idea of creating a race of aliens that weren't super-intelligent "saviors" was nothing short of brilliant. Just another group of beings trying to survive - some good, some bad. To be honest, I haven't set foot in a theater in years - it's just not worth taking a gamble when the price for a family of 4 easily exceeds $50. I'll wait for the screener to show up on Bit Torrent. Yeah - a great bit Screw You to Hollywood. ~Dave

how few people seem to have made the connection. Plus I actually liked that they didn't shove the conclusions you're meant to draw down your throat. It was more a case of, 'this is how they are behaving to other sentient beings, with languages and customs of their own. Is it acceptable or does it make you sick?'. Likewise I strongly appreciated that the aliens weren't painted as saints or martyrs - lots of them were a**holes, because that's what a society is like. I also don't get how any self-proclaimed geek could watch that film and not totally rock out to the alien weaponry they used. The lighting gun, the rail gun - the gravity gun?! Fan-freaking-tastic. Just great. Overall I really enjoyed it, on several levels.
