CIO salaries on the rise

According to a survey done by CIO Insight, the annual pay packets of CIOs are on the sixth consecutive year of increase.

According to a survey done by CIO Insight, the annual pay packets of CIOs are on the sixth consecutive year of increase. The figures obtained from a total of 266 CIOs polled showed that the average pay packets stand at $211,060, up from $204,319 last year. This is a far cry from the mere $167,242 that CIOs are getting in 2003 when the survey was started.

Note that "additional/bonus" refers to previous years' bonus or additional payouts. Base compensation refers to average annual base compensation.

Outsourcing, virtualization, SaaS, et. al., are making the technology landscape more and more complex. With more options for companies, having strong leadership, from CIOs who are competent not only in technology, but also in business, is becoming increasingly critical. The current wisdom says that CIOs should focus on "alignment" with "the business". The future is in the realization that there is no divide between IT and "the business". Strategies, rather than focusing on alignment, should focus on efficiency. Being able to deliver on time and on budget (and within SLAs if they are established) is often much more critical of a business need than alignment. As workforces become increasingly geographically-disparate confederations of employees, contractors and vendors, working in varying situations on multiple continents, a clear vision of how that complicated mix of people and technology can actually run MORE efficiently is vital. And that vision and leadership must come from the CIO.

I'm of two minds on this from the education business point of view. My leadership wants a 200K+ CTO/CIO with corresponding performance for $65K. I understand that altruism is ok when one is young and fresh into the workplace but am not impressed that I must deal with it when my skill set far outstrips the compensation packages offered in this environment. Does not compute in the schoolhouse where technology is utilized daily, sorely needed and looked upon as a necessary evil in most cases.
