Dell announces laptops with hardware disk encryption

Dell has just announced the "world's most secure commercial notebooks" in the form of its Latitude D630 and D830 range.

According to the press release:

“Dell is at the forefront of notebook security because it ranks as a top concern for customers in an environment where more data is produced by an increasingly mobile work force,” said Margaret Franco, director, Dell Product Group. “The industry-first solution we’re announcing today adds to our multi-pronged approach to security that delivers an ironclad assurance of protection.”

Basically, the new range of laptops uses Seagate's Momentus full disk encryption (FDE), which does encryption down at the disk level. This is implemented together with Wave Systems Corp's EMBASSY Trust Suite, a security management tool that has the ability to activate and manage Seagate's FDE features.

Both the Latitude D630 and D830 are available immediately.
