Yahoo enhances its search service

Online search major Yahoo has revamped its search engine to be more "helpful and engaging."

A quote from the article at Associated Press:

The Sunnyvale-based company regards the upgrade to be announced Tuesday as the most significant change to its search engine since it reclaimed control of the underlying technology nearly 3 1/2 years ago.

The features added the Yahoo search engine include:

  • A suggest feature that displays related concepts and search words as the user types the query
  • Shortcuts to photos, videos, and music

A quote from the detailed article on the new features (Search Engine Journal):

Enter Yahoo acquisitions of Flickr, Delicious, and Upcoming.org into the mix, along with Yahoo's own social Yahoo Video and Yahoo Answers channels, and the company has always seemed to have the potential to reinvent or dramatically change search results.

Yahoo has been playing catch-up to Google ever since Google ceased to be Yahoo's search technology provider. A string of acquisitions, coupled with changes at the management end, seem to renew Yahoo's vigor. And let's not forget Yahoo's Panama advertising platform, which will help Yahoo achieve profitability — that is, if it improves its falling share in the U.S. search market. Do you think Yahoo is doing enough to trump Google at its core competency?
