Video: Novo Minoru 3D Webcam is novel but needs work

January 8, 2009, 5:07 PM PST | Length:00:00:54

At CES 2009, UK-based Novo introduced the Minoru 3D Webcam. Available from Amazon.com for $89.95, the Minoru uses two cameras to create a stereoscopic effect when viewed with red and blue 3D glasses. According to Novo, the camera works with Windows Live Messenger, Skype, AIM, OoVoo, and other messenger programs. You can also take and upload 3D videos to YouTube. Of course, viewers must have 3D glasses to watch your creations; otherwise they’ll just get a headache.

3D displays seems to be a trend at this years CES. Sony, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, Samsung, ViewSonic, and others demonstrated 3D monitors or prototype TVs. But, the Minoru was the only 3D Webcam I saw. I watched the Minoru demonstration, and it’s a novel idea. I’m not adding this one to our Geek Gifts guide just yet. The image quality wasn’t great and $89.95 is a bit much for a novelty.
