Who doesn't want a new Puppy? New releases from Puppy Linux

The Puppy Linux Project has been busy with several new versions: "Wary," Lucid, and Slacko. Check out some of the new features for each.

The Puppy Linux Project has several new version releases, in case you've missed them. Puppy Linux is a distribution of Linux that is specifically developed for fast, secure computing and a focus on portability. You don't have to install Puppy; you can carry it with you on a CD or USB, which allows you to do handy things like boot from it on a PC that needs malware removal and save data from a corrupted disk. Another point in it's favor is that it can be run on old PCs just fine because it's small and has very low minimum system requirements.

That's the basic story on Puppy. Here are some of the newest versions that you might be interested in checking out:

Puppy Linux 5.2 "Wary"

"Wary" is optimized for legacy PCs and is a major upgrade from 5.1. All packages were recompiled in the T2 System Development Environment open source build kit. Other feature upgrades include:

  • upgrade path to Xorg 7.6
  • updated PuppyPhone VoIP app
  • new PupCamera app for automatically detecting cameras

Lucid Puppy (Ubuntu-compatible build)

Called Finlandia, Lucid 5.28 is the first Lucid (and first official Puppy) to use the C and ffmpeg libraries optimized for i686 computers. Here's some of what's new:

  • new Control Panel for easier customization
  • more new themes and wallpapers
  • uses Roxterm console instead of older x-terminal
  • Bash 4.10

Slacko Puppy (Slackware-compatible build)

Slacko Puppy 5.3 is built with binary compatibility with Slackware 13.37 packages, and access to the Slackware package repositories. Features:

  • automatic Internet connectivity with Frisbee Network Manager
  • improved multimedia support
  • improved PET package creation tools, package management
