2007 viewer and pdf downloads available

In previous discussions, I’ve posted links to viewers and a download for saving documents to PDF format. If you’re using Office 2007, there are two downloads you might be interested in.

  • PowerPoint Viewer 2007: View full-featured presentations created in PowerPoint 97 and later versions, including 2007.
  • 2007 Microsoft Office Add-in: Microsoft Save as PDF or XPS: Export and save to the PDF and XPS formats from eight Office 2007 programs.

Both have been available since November of 2006, but I know many of you are just now upgrading.

Simpo PDF Creator can convert all MS Office documents into PDF format.

The Outlook 2007 "Save as PDF Add-in" does not function, I'm afraid. I wish I'd known it before I purchased Office 2007. And Microsoft has no plans for adding it, I understand.

My primary (and only) office suite is OpenOffice.org, so I rely on these viewers when people send me MS-Office documents. The thing is, what about Word and Excel? These programs are still available in the 2003 version and have no 2007 versions. And they're imperfect. Yesterday a friend send me an Excel Spreadsheet in SpreadsheetML format and the viewer couldn't open it. Any release plans you know about?

You need to save Outlook data to a pdf file? Personally, I've always used CutePrinter and not the Office add-in's -- In Office 2003, the CutePrinter item is available in Outlook 2003. I don't have Outlook 2007 installed, so I can't check -- perhaps someone running Outlook 2007 and CutePrinter could check? It's free from Acro Software http://www.acrosoftware.com/

I wish I could help, but I don't know. It is odd that these downloads have been available for seven months and still nothing for Word or Excel. Most likely, the PowerPoint Viewer and PDF converter needed little or no true upgrading. Office 2007 seems to be strongly dependent on XML, it's possible that the two available downloads were already heavily XML compliant, but that's just a kiss in the wind -- I really have no idea. I'm sorry I can't be of more help.

I already own Adobe Acrobat 7 so I've got the software that I need. And it worked just fine with Microsoft Office 2003 and XP. The problem is that I have the latest version of Microsoft Office -- Office 2007 -- and I've discovered that, for some unpublished reason, Microsoft chose to disable the ability to print Outlook 2007 e-mails in PDF format with Adobe Acrobat 7.0. Rumor has it that if I throw even more money at it, i.e., upgrade to Adobe Acrobat 8.0, I will, once again, be able to print/save Outlook e-mails in PDF format.

Maybe not -- CutePrinter is free. If it works with Outlook 2007, and I don't know for certain that it does -- would it solve your problem?

Thanks Martin -- good information.
