Drobo unveils NAS add-on at MacWorld

Last week, while I was at CES, I had the chance to talk with Data Robotics, Inc. CEO and co-founder Geoff Barrall about a new product the company was planning to announce at MacWorld this week.

Today, the company officially announced a hardware add-on called DroboShare that adds network-attached storage functionality to the Drobo, their popular backup solution that I reviewed last year.

DroboShare

The Drobo Share has the same sleek design as the Drobo and sits snugly underneath. It even has four indentations on the top of the case so that the Drobo's rubber feet can slip into them to create a unified look.

Here are some of the specs:

  • Support for Gigabit Ethernet
  • Support for up to 16TB (4 x 4TB drives)
  • Support for static or dynamic IP addresses
  • Auto-mounting SMB shares
  • Support for two Drobos
  • Support for EXT3, HFS+, NTFS and FAT32

Pricing is set at $199 which makes a Drobo with Drobo Share around $700 without any included storage. See more on Drobo Share here.

Pretty expensive NIC for the DROBO. Should sell for $20 not $200 and be inside the DROBO box.

I'd like to see this price come down to about $400 since it doesn't include the drives.
