Way back when, new browser releases would invariably be judged by the IT press based upon the browser’s “speed.” At the time, speed was measured by the time it took the browser to render a page. After all, on a 266 mHz Pentium II, parsing HTML and opening all of the needed connections while also manipulating the screen was not the fastest task.
Today, it looks like browser speed is still being measured, but JavaScript execution is the new benchmark. Of course, not every page uses JavaScript. Plus, how many applications have such complex JavaScript that the speed of execution will have a noticeable impact on usage?
