iPhone 4 rollout: Buy, wait, or pass?

Do you plan to buy the iPhone 4, wait until the mania has subsided, or pass on Apple's latest device? Share the reasons for your decision with the TechRepublic community.

The Apple iPhone 4 mania has been building to today's launch; it has been reported that at least 600,000 people preordered the iPhone 4, and one guy started camping out last week to buy the device.

By now, most people have decided whether they want to buy the iPhone 4, wait (for perhaps Verizon to offer the iPhone?), or pass. When TechRepublic's Sonja Thompson asked yesterday on our Facebook page if members plan to purchase the iPhone 4, only one person answered that they expect to get the device today.

Please share with the TechRepublic community whether you plan to buy the iPhone 4, you're still deciding if you will buy the device, or if you are going to skip it. If you're buying the iPhone 4 today, tell us about your shopping experience, including where you purchased the phone.

Coming soon: Within the next week, TechRepublic will publish a photo gallery of the iPhone 4 cracked open.

In marking your observation I offer the link below.I always did like this site: http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/youare You'll need to give the usual instruction to your script blocker first.

Oz_Media
Oz_Media

That's an oldie, mate. People around here know the link well, so well in fact that, in order for it to be effective, you'd need to use a tinyurl. Then the paranoid IT folks around here will avoid it as it runs a script, and there are many people here who's browser has never even been introduced to the possibility of such ghastly horrors. :D It's usually the pivpiv link used and only for n00bs though, yours is a dead giveaway. Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system, HELP HELP I'm being repressed! BLOODY PEASANT! Dead give away that! You saw it didn't you? Eh? You saw him repressing me! (Sorry, i'll go back to my hole now.)

What can I say? I see that I am thought of as a 'newbie'. Hmm. After almost 20 years of being online that is good, much like being called 'young man' every now and then. :-) As for scripts, most of the net is banned from running scripts on any of my machines, even the BBC. The problem of 'innocent' vectors will never be eliminated. Ask the evul empire, Symantec. :-0

Well there are some things about web2 that I rather like. Music is one of them, e.g. We7 and stuff. Pretty soon I am going to start charging these people rent for the mp3 files they dump in my cache. I mean, I have to go through it and very carefully remove them. ;-)

Jaqui
Jaqui

some people just can't take a joke huh. :D those who have been here a while knew it was a poke at the whole web 2 stupidity symbolized by the iphone/twitter/facebook/youtube/myspace weenies.

CharlieSpencer

Usually it's just referred to as 'the link'. Usage: "What a troll. I'm going to hit 'the button'. Would somebody give him 'the link'? I've forgotten the URL."

I'm supposed to have gone away today, that's my excuse for being online at this time of a weekend. But this is most definitely worth it, as the adverts might have it: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/10490572.stm Time to go and buy a few bottles of Bishop's Tipple I think. I feel a celebration is in order. 0_o

Yup. It seems these apples were not fresh enough for these gourmands! :-) Schadenfreude is a terrible thing, I know, but I have been allowing myself loads of it, ever since the spate of Apple security problems. I think I like these best: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/security/apple-plugs-15-java-for-mac-security-holes/4185 Time to upgrade then: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/10/12/snow_leopard_data_eating_bug/ http://www.reghardware.com/2010/03/29/mac_os_x_updates/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmbfWayfikY Oops!

Isn't that cute? "Two Maryland residents have filed a class-action lawsuit" I believe there were over 700 in the class action suit that was thrown out and never tried in the MS 'READY or CAPABLE" lawsuit. Let's just hope, for their sake, that the people joining the Apple suit are all in the same state or are in states that follow identical law, and even moreso that their complaints are absolutely identical, unlike the MS kaibosh.

I've used it a lot in Usenet, but it hadn't occurred to me that people using web fora would do so. I am afraid to say there is still a corner of me that is forever Usenet, and utterly arrogant about web 2x users, for which I apologise. This I know is a contradiction, since the link is in fact a web 2x link. :-) However, and in true Usenet fashion to return to the topic, did you hear about the class action suits against Apple for their not so very good techology?: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38041506/ns/technology_and_science-wireless/ That's not to say that the PC world is without difficulties, but this is only one brand of many in that splendid area of technological innovation: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38021371/ns/technology_and_science-tech_and_gadgets/ For me apples are for eating. :-)

that would require having flash installed, and flash is a part of the idiot life thing. :p

Using 1.7 million people as if it is a number that justifies your purchse. Do you have any idea how many cell phones are out there and how small Apple's marketshare with the i-Phone is? 77% of i-Phone purchases were upgrades from older i-Phones. Of course when people find out what they lack compared to really smart phones, they are eager to upgrade. Apple owns a mere 16% of teh market share as of now. "According to NPD, more smartphones were sold in the US that run Android than smartphones than run iPhone OS in Q1 2010" It's just people that buy into Apple's marketing that are lead to THINK everyone else is buying them. When they sell phones, they wave flags and ring bells to make the world know they sold another one.

Zwort

Well you know, I may have found some good news for iPhone users, not that it's going to be much good here, because most subscribers are in the USA (at this point I'll stress that this in no way resembles spam, since the supplier is in the UK): https://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/shop/detail.asp?ProductID=6254 It's compatible with other phones too but, as I say, this is in the good old U of K. Now I wonder if it helps with the aerial problem. Hmm. It does seem to deal with the fleshbot contact problem.

Oz_Media
Oz_Media

It's true, most i-Phone subscribers are in the US. However, Europe has a more advanced mobile network, i-Phone sales have always lagged in India too, a very technologically advanced country. North America is sucking hind teet on mobility. You have to remember though, most Americans don't understand there are other, more advanced nations on Earth when it comes to such things. Many figure the USA is the key representative of world view.

Zwort

Things are changing. Asia is making sure of that. I'm not sure how much dread to experience.

CharlieSpencer

"According to NPD, more smartphones were sold in the US that run Android than smartphones than run iPhone OS in Q1 2010" Might I suggest that a stat for the first quarter might not be a good indicator. Anyone interested in an iPhone would have known the new one would be out in the second quarter and deferred their purchase until then.

Oz_Media
Oz_Media

The point is, he's was makign out as if everyone was lining up for i-Phones and other devices didn't have any market share, which is hideously incorrect.

john3347

I will absolutely, totally pass on almost anything whose name starts with a lower case "i". Any i-something telephone is included in the "anything" not the "almost".

Must go to store and buy i-Phone, must have it before neighbour does! LOL, not bloody likely.

I think you know where I stand with i-Toys. Maybe they could spoof a movie? "i-Toy Story" The trials and tribulations of doing less for more, and trying to look cool while doing it. :D Rights up for sale soon!

Oz_Media
Oz_Media

Who does. Unless it has direct effect on you, say for being a partner or investor, it really doesn't matter to anyone else. Service to the demarc is all people should have to care about, the companies that come and go, merge etc. are irrelevant these days.

Zwort

Well, maybe, but if you read the history the agreement with the manufacturer dated to a matter of hours before the press conference! It's a matter of hype I suppose. I only vaguely remembered it, and did a quick search. I didn't realise that the broacaster is extinct. Never did pay much attention to these sort of things.

Oz_Media

I think it would have worked had it been released two to three years earlier. It was just too late out of the gate, they could have saved face and simply offered an upgraded dish after a couple of years and saved face, as they cam eout too late they just launched a flop and had no way of recovering from it.

I most soitonly do, Stanley, I most soitonly do know. I've just spent a couple of minutes reading the comments on the El Reg article I posted up. Wow. I think that fan bois and gurlz are substantially outnumbered by crusty old gits who know better. Now that I know I am not alone in the UK I feel good. iToy story? Did you ever hear about British Satellite Broadcasting and the 'squarial'? Uhuh. It tanked: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squarial 'For wont of a horse a kingdom was lost'. Hype.

i-Life, I like it! or should I say i-like it? If I ever did purchase one, please bring your hammer and cents. I was given an i-Phone to use for work last year, gave it back a couple of months later and asked for my HTC P-4000 back. the new IT guy got my phone, much to his absolute joy. Finally I could get some work done with my phone instead of just looking up hockey scores for people and flipping through crappy quality pictures just to look cool, much to MY absolute joy.

but had to put the offer to help stop you if it did. :D the i-life thing, for those with no life. ;)

now be nice, I didn't say BOI, as in Skaterboi or anything Avril Lavigne makes money from. I ALMOST did but I refrained and used the correct BOY. :D

Zwort

I had not looked at the comments page until just now, and I see that at least one deletion has occurred. Judging by the acerbic comments on one side and the lover boi comments on the other, it would seem that the debate is as hot in the UK as anywhere else. These are some of the effects of 'good' marketing, aka hype. What a mob indeed mob, or mobile (in the UK) being the operative word. :-)

Oz_Media
Oz_Media

Can you believe the number of posts about whether its better to phone and upgrade or line up for an hour? Well, we debate semantics endlessly too, I guess but its usually due to people not understanding what is being said. It's funny how many Apple fanboys are on that site too, LOL. What a mob.

Apple's insistence on "managing the user experience" aka "assuming and keeping ultimate control", is the main reason I never will buy an iPhone. I don't want to have to jailbreak my phone just to use it the way I want. Go Android!

You are correct Sir! I have nothing more to add. PASS!!

Ipoon? no thanks dont do Istuff. Couple of people around the shop ask me for help sometimes on their Istuff, I just say no thanks, don't know anything about it and I don't wish to learn. My second line is up for a new upgrade and I will be getting the X. I will then have to add another line because my son is NOT getting a data plan.. plain and simple

I think that I'll pass, sure I'd love that high resolution screen but the bottom line is I think we need a bigger screen. Those of us that set up the dpi on our large monitors for type are looking forwards to the droid X for that reason alone.

Got an iPhone 5 Already, its called a Nokia :-)

Oz_Media
Oz_Media

Well said. Nokia has a 'real' operating system that allows the owner to operate it as he/she wishes and choose what apps they want to install, update and use, for free and without asking a Finn to approve it. "Finland, Finland, Finland, The country where I want to be, Pony trekking or camping, Or just watching TV. Finland, Finland, Finland. It's the country for me. You're so near to Russia, So far from Japan, Quite a long way from Cairo, Lots of miles from Vietnam. Finland, Finland, Finland, The country where I want to be, Eating breakfast or dinner, Or snack lunch in the hall. Finland, Finland, Finland. Finland has it all."

I have a Mac Pro. Why get the iPhone 4 when I have everything i need right here? I already have a Motorola Karma, and that is enough to cover my needs. I have a couple iPods, and then like 5 other Macs and 3 other PCs sitting on the side.

I bit into the pre order thing for the first time. At 830 AM on the pre order day I managed to get the phone into the "cart" @ apple and paid for it a few tries later. Last year I upgraded to a 3GS without a contract for 399 and sold the 3G for 340. That was about a month after the release of the 3GS. This year I bit the bullet for 2 years. But After having the phone for 2 days I think I'll be happy for two years. We have great service in SW FL. The 4G phone is fast enough as it is, the battery life is great, and I do like the camera better than any other phone I've tried, and I can read the fine print. The Video games from MLB.com are no longer are a concern with battery life. Why get caught in the hoopla any longer. I'll take the steady performer that will not have the security issues the open platforms have. I was a Verizon customer with a "top rated" smart phone and I'm done with unstable systems and their issues for good.

the iPhone 4 is not 4G. It does not support it even if your network upgraded. sorry.

I subscribe to the views of the Freedom Foundation, GNU, and other open-source initiatives. I despise Apple for the way they treat their customers and their proprietary and even draconian policies. I never have bought or supported Apple, never will.

iPhone is finally comparable in overall capabilities to my 3yr old iPaq. I'm passing on iPhone (or Droid or whatever) AT LEAST until 4G is widely adopted.
