Poll: Are you supplementing your income?

The dismal economy is just one reason why many IT professionals are supplementing their income with various side projects. Are you? Let us know by taking this poll.

Many IT professionals supplement their income with various side projects. For years, I ran a Web server in my house and did Web development work on the side to bring in a few extra dollars. Even now, I write for TechRepublic.

Freelance work is not always about the money; sometimes, these side gigs encourage us to learn new things, lead to the start of a new career as a consultant, or just give IT pros something to do with their free time.

Of course, I officiate high school sports. Baseball, softball, volleyball, basketball and soccer. Spread it out over the year and I never get bored and the extra money keeps rolling in. The best part is I enjoy doing it. The day I stop enjoy doing it, I stop.

It looked like a lot of fun, but a lot of work too. He was always studying obscure rules and such. It was interesting to see the "progression" in the field, too. For example, he'd be a head referee for a high school football game all of the time, but he considered it a real priviledge to be the chain mover for a U. South Carolina game once. J.Ja

No, not me, I would never undermind my company. disclosure agreement and all. But I am working on a new development project(at home of course), like JCK there, hope to complete it this fall and will sell to the highest bidder. :)

I'm a programmer by day, and PC tech/consultant at night. Plus, I'm working on a multi-practice office software suite (which I hope to complete by next year), and will sell off to the highest bidder. :^0

Back before I had kids, I would do little side jobs. I did teach at community colleges and university night courses. I did do some desktop publishing. I have done some website stuff. I conducted a church choir, and have been a paid soloist. I don't do as much now, before the recession, I was doing travelling for work, and I do have a hobby which demands a regular committment. But I would never say never. Maybe when the kids go to university I might pick up something. James

I wish you could select both. Right now I'm doing my "regular" consulting contract full time, teaching college part time, and starting a small non-IT business with my son. Financial diversity is the key. The contract pays the bills, the teaching pays the medical, and the other business is fun and, hopefully soon, profitable so i can actually afford to retire.

...to bring in extra cash throughout the year. Fill-in for martial arts instruction, small-business IT consulting, home PC repair, market research stuff. Nothing I'd list for a lending application, but enough to ensure that birthdays and Christmas are covered comfortably. At some point, I'd like to pursue teaching a class at a community college or local university.

I am trying to get a pt position at the Jr College. I was thinking of doing a bit of Web development for movie money.

Lots of lurkers around here. We are actually going to lease our house as it will not sell and live in my father-in-laws house and get it fixed up enough to where it will ultimately sell. He can no longer live alone and we finally have permission to try to move it - now that the real estate market has tanked.

house painting, cleaning windows, I'll walk your dog or repair your home PC (hardware & software). I can also stand on my head and spit quarters, dimes and nickles. All mentioned acts will require a fee.

If by "supplementing my income" you mean "stealing from work and selling it on Ebay" ... Then "no" - that would be wrong. But I only have 1,653,860 most post-it notes to go before I get a Civic SI.

I've got a couple of interesting side jobs. First I have a small farm that I run and I usually sell quite a bit of hay to some of my horse owning friends. That gives me the money to take my horses to the shows. My other source of income is painting custom cars, trucks, boats, jet skis, etc. My dad and I have built street rods as a hobby since I was a kid and I have a list of people waiting for me to paint cars for them. I usually only do 1 a month or less due to lack of time but that's always a nice bonus to drop in the old checking account.
