Poll: Do you say 'yes' to freelance consulting work?

Some developers are full-time consultants, while others moonlight or opt not to dip their toes in consulting work. Do you accept freelance consulting gigs?

The software development industry is filled with folks who are full-time or part-time consultants and contractors. I had been doing part-time consulting work for years until it eventually blossomed into a full-time job.

Most developers are perfectly happy (and busy!) with their day job and are not doing any kind of consulting work. That said, the sheer number of folks who are consulting in addition to or in lieu of a full time job is pretty amazing to me.

I use consulting work for additional practice on my dormant capabilities. They say that if you don't use it you lose it. So that is why I stay active with other consulting projects so that I can stay on top of new technologies and techniques. Not really for the money, but more the experience.

Calls from personal clients as well as companies that I contract with really help, especially when there is month left at the end of the paycheck. Part of the reason it works for me, I suppose, is that my day job is hourly. These calls also break up the regular routine and expose me to new peripherals as well as help me to become more efficient at troubleshooting.

Lots of folks who can't afford your day job rates can benefit substantial from an hour or two of education or updating their lame website or knocking out a little app or script that puts a bow on their can of worms. It provides opportunities to expand one's scope of expertise and think outside the box. Which makes you better at your core capabilities.

There's not enough time to bring any value. I could do some data reformatting or highly strictly specified coding in the evening and weekends but to bring substantial value through analysis, design and planning requires full commitment to a project and client.
