As Internet users display more of their personal information on social networking Web sites, and office workers upload more sensitive data to online software programs, computer hackers are employing increasingly sophisticated methods to pry that information loose. In many cases, they’re devising small attacks that can fly under the radar of traditional security software, while exploiting the trust users place in popular business and consumer Web sites.
From social networks to smartphones, more and more user data is entering the digital space, making it all the more lucrative for hackers to target smaller segments of people. And the problem gets complicated considering the wide array of network devices and software services.
Even online firms such as SalesForce.com have been victims of malicious attacks. Hence, the various pointers to keep in mind when transacting online are:
- Avoid passing sensitive information on your online social profiles
- Regularly update your browsers and other software to remain up to date on patches
- No reputable firm will elicit password, login, or account information over e-mail or IM, hence refrain from passing them via e-mail or IM
- Use anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewalls when browsing.
