BitMicro unveiled a flash memory-based solid state drive this week that is designed for the enterprise. The E-Disk Altima will come in capacities of up to 1.6 TB capacity, 3.5-inch format, as well as support for 4 Gbits/sec Fiber Channel.
The new drive is designed for high-bandwidth storage applications such as streaming video on demand, medical imaging, data recording, warehousing, and online transactions. BitMicro says the Altima offers sustained rates of more than 230 MB/s and upwards of 55,000 I/O operations per second. To compare, a fast disk drive will get about 400 I/O operations per second.
The Altima is expected to be available in volume by Q2 of 2008.
There is no mention of price, which I suspect will be a pivotal factor in enterprise deployments.
