Sun teams up with Dell to put Solaris on PowerEdge servers

Sun Microsystems and Dell have announced a distribution agreement to put Sun’s Solaris 10 operating system on Dell’s PowerEdge servers.

Jonathan Schwartz, Sun’s chief executive, noted that, “We have 12 million (Solaris) licenses in the marketplace, and a majority of them aren’t running on Sun hardware.”

Excerpt from CNET ZDNet News:

Under the multiyear agreement, Dell also will provide Solaris support services to its PowerEdge customers. The agreement brings two rivals together, with Dell gaining a relationship to better serve its customers already running Solaris on their systems and Sun a potentially larger market base for Solaris.

The agreement has the two companies working together to certify systems as well as creating products based on the partnership.

Certainly, it will help Dell capture potential customers who wanted to run Solaris but were hesitant due to the uncertainty of support.

Do you run Solaris in the office? Which brand of servers do you run Solaris on?
