Via Technologies readies new 64-bit processors

Via Technologies will be making processors based on its new Isaiah architecture this year. Sporting two cores at a speedy 2 GH, the chips are expected to double the performance of the company’s current chips but consume the same amount of power.

The first Isaiah chips will make their debut toward the middle of the year and are groundbreaking — at least where the company is concerned.

Excerpt from CNET News.com:

For one thing, the chips can process instructions out of order… This enables the chip to keep churning while waiting for crucial data. The chips will also be capable of processing 64-bit software.

Via Technologies commands only a tiny fraction of the market, but many thin-client makers buy processors from the Taiwanese company. Other companies, including Samsung Electronics and Oqo, have also put Via processors into their handheld computers.
