In a previous episode, I talked about some of the worst aspects of working in IT. But we shouldn't forget that IT is still a very rewarding career for a lot of people. And understanding what draws people to the field is just as important for recruiting and retention as understanding what might drive them away. This episode of Sanity Savers for IT executives counts down the top five things that make it great to work in IT.

Great video, some others I deal with since I wear all the hats. I get paid to learn. I also think lots of Companies will send the IT folks out for company paid training. very expensive training. You get to work on stuff un-related to your specific training. OJT is a wonderful thing. You want to learn security, or web development, you get to see it up close and personal. I personally don't get that luxury since I wear all the hats at my current job, but in past jobs I did and that's how I got into IT. I would agree that those are the top five though. Good job Jason

I.T. can be very cyclical. When I'm busy, I'm VERRRY busy. But when it's a slow period, I have a full 8 hrs/day to do whatever I want at work. This is just like being at home, but being paid for it. My Manager doesn't come down on me for it because he treats me as a resource like a racecar. I sit idling in the garage sometimes, but when the pedal is pushed, it's 0 to 60 in 2 seconds. I figure that in the past 10 years over 2 job positions, it's about half and half, busy and idle. I'm not sure if that's an industry average tho as I think even if it were, it would be tough to get IT workers to admit it - lol. How about an informal poll here? Do you have ample downtime?

get to "play"!? thats the statement all IT pro's hear from their users, and if as IT people we use the term, then we are re-enforcing that statement. A statement I dislike with a passion. It is never play, it is basically, learn and understand the new equipment, or lose your job. please, lets not shoot ourselves in the foot, by using a term that was probably coined by an end user, to belittle what we do as professionals.

Self rewards: Doing a job right and sometimes on my own dime as a professional challenge. I get to pick and choose projects and every so often one particularly bad issue surfaces that I tackle if nothing more than to see if I can do it. In Judiasm it is called a Mitzvah. Public Praise: And every so often, as when I recently just set up one computer in a medical office, I came in and the staff member was almost jumping out of her skin with joy!!! Incredible. Earned Privilege: A very highly placed executive at Aon Group, who worked with Trump personally, got along so well with me that I had rights to enter her office at any time to solve a problem. She later invited my wife and I to an awards dinner - met Trump - and also got us tickets to THE PRODUCERS. People like this are a total joy. Power: WE are the nerves and blood veins of modern business and it can be both good and horribly frightening to realize the true power that we have, particularly when working on servers. Outsourcing: AND even though this is a negative, it is fiendishly fun to watch outsourcing projects totally collapse because low quality workers do not do a job right, nor cheaper,faster,better (one word) these days. And they won't get tickets to THE PRODUCERS or meet Trump by doing so.
