What are the worst iPhone apps? Submit your picks

I've posted my list of the most useful iPhone apps. But, how about the worst ones? Which apps disappoint, are over-priced, or have a bad user experience?

I've posted my list of the 25 must-have third-party apps for the iPhone. But, how about the worst ones? Which apps disappoint, are over-priced, or have a terrible user experience?

I'd like to publish that list, too, but I'd like your help with it. Think about which iPhone apps have caused you the most frustration and resentment. I'm especially looking for:

  • Apps that were a waste of money
  • Apps that were a waste of time
  • Apps that were a big disappoint
  • Apps that just weren't as good as they could have been

Please post your picks for the worst iPhone apps in the discussion.

Of course, the most infamous iPhone app of all-time might be the "I Am Rich" app (below), which cost $999 and did nothing but attempt to make a lot of unearned money for its creator, German developer Armin Heinrich. Apple initially approved the app and eight people bought it before Apple got wise and removed it from the App Store.

"which cost $999 and did nothing but attempt to make a lot of unearned money for its creator" this is a biased comment, please techrepublic remove it! OK, now removing an app just because someone was stupid enough to buy it, being a "no cash" and then the idiot says "it was a mistake", "it was a joke" and begging "please Apple remove this app", is simply wrong!! seriously, if people want to spend their money on status symbols, that's OK for me. But taking into account that many iPhone users are stupid (I could bet 90%), well apple must protect those idiots, eh? and the "25 must-have iPhone apps for productive geeks" shows my point about idiotic apps for idiot users, a productive phone is the one made for working with app made for that, like Blackberry, Android, Windows Mobile I mean "Phone", and even Symbian, and the iPhone is more like a toy and less like a working tool. Yes, some geeks (real geeks) will make it a working tool, the rest they have an expensive toy. Just using the words IT and iPhone in the same quote... well they don't totally mix up.

You mean Apple allows bad apps? I thought they'd be banned! [Oh ya. Apple still wants their cut - so they don't care.]

In the short that I've had an iPhone, I've found some stuff completely and utterly useless: - Glow Draw!...basically a useless and very bad clone of Glow Magic - ShowTime...brings movie functionality to the 3G and 3GS. Too bad it crashes mid-way through rendering and drops audio out in the course of recording. Useless. - Safari for iOS 4...Yeah, it has nice features like multiple windowed browsing and OS integrated functionality, but it crashes on me nearly every time I use it. Useless. Those are my picks...anyone else?

Any reason why I don't see anything printed or reported about the Droid Phones? Thanks, Harry

That's real cute, but you should go back and read the question. The author asked "What are the worst iPhone apps?" Not, "What is the worst smart phone?".

The worst iPhone app is the phone itself. It is BY FAR the worst phone I have ever used. In their haste to make it the snazziest device out there, Apple seems to have forgotten that it is, first and foremost, a CELL PHONE. It needs to make and receive phone calls with a large degree of reliability. I am sick and tired of dropped/missed/unintelligible calls.

It's basically a Scrabble clone you play with friends. Great fun - WHEN it works ok but server problems cause you to have to log back in and more often than enough you lose the games you were playing or it reloads all the chat messages as new.

I don't own a smart phone cause I don't see the scene in buying a phone that you just keep buying. The OS should come with the most popular apps W/O having to pay for them. A friend of mine got 1 for his son, he lets him get apps for it then complains about the expense of the apps. bad enough paying 400.00 for a phone then 90.00 a month to use it and the cost of apps to use it. Don't get me wrong there grate for Biz but I don't thing so as a play toy.

The Idiot Opinion app. It always has an opinion especially when it doesn't know anything about the subject. It doesn't care how stupid its' comments are and there is no way to turn it off or uninstall it.

I think all this about "a phone" in a world of hundreds is simply stupid.

Yes, you win a virtual pat on the back. You can't get it now, but you will be able to pick it up once I finish developing my "VPotB" app. (Just $2.99) I have the MyTouch and load apps that I think will be useful and nothing else. I can't think of a game I really want to play on a small screen, so I pretty much look through the "Productivity" and "Tools" sections. My friend with the iPhone sounds like an advertising parrot, always telling me that there are "over 35,000 apps for this phone!" I guess I should ask him how many he can use at once... I've had to sit while he scrolls through to impress me, and I have the same experience when I scan the MyTouch apps. LOTS of useless, worthless apps that I can't figure out a purpose for, let alone WHO would acutally want them. So this forum should do my work for me! I would rather read about them than look them up for myself.

Purchased Archetype for my teenager before vacationing in a remote area without phone/internet access (for her iTouch). Imagine her disappointment when she found you had to be connected to play. Otherwise it's a great game. They just need to notify you up front that you must be connected to play.

Par-Pro Doesn't have an iPhone. Doesn't have any apps to add to the list. Did'nt answer the question. Just like he never read the article. Has an opinion nonetheless. Can't uninstall him. He's a living breathing app.

I fully agree that OS4 is one of the worst apps, especially on my 3G. Made the phone perform like a dog, with no real benefit. Yes, I have subsequently uninstalled it and reverted to 3.13. Yes, I lost some backed-up info in the process, because v4 backups cannot be restored to v3 environment. Yes, it took me the better part of a couple of hours to research the process and get the job done. Was it fun? No. Is OS4 a good 'App'? No. Question answered.

yobtaf

There are articles all over the place on how to revert to the old OS. Don't grouse, do something about it. Geez, I thought this was a forum for IT people. Boy was I wrong.

I agree with the dribble....delete those posts. As for the worst...not sure if its the worst but sure was a waste. Pedometer. States that it can't work with iOS4 as no pedometers can work in the background so buy it. WRONG. Walkmeter does it just fine.

My 3GS did the perpetual search thing even before the update. I've often wondered what the point of that was. I've noticed that since the OS 4 release, I can't keep my Bluetooth paired. I've had to go in and "forget" and re-pair the device several times since the update.

ben_j_dover
ben_j_dover

My candidate is the OS 4 release that seems to have created a lot more problems for my 3GS Iphone than it solved (if it solved anything). Biggest gripe is whatever was done to Bluetooth that leaves it in perpetual search - even when a preferred device is attached. Next vote goes to WunderRadio - wonder why I though it would be an effective radio device. It might be if AT&T actually had a 3G network; as it is either the stream halts and restarts - or it simply drops and has to be restarted.

Don't buy another one then, it's your choice. And while we're at it, why does everyone think this is an outlet to vent on everything. This could be a very constructive excerise if it were taken seriously. I really don't like wasting my time reading some mal-nots dribble about his problem with a product, if they don't contribute anything but the dribble. If you have a legitimate issue state it and why, otherwise why waste everyone's time with stupid unstubstantiated comments. Jim

therefore have no knowledge of what apps are best or worst in that arena. My opinion is, why pay for apps when I can get whatever I need directly from the internet on my phone?

At least you don't have an opinion. (if I could spell, I'd rule the earth)
