Join us for a Community Event in Louisville to celebrate TechRepublic's 10th anniversary

TechRepublic's Community Event will take place in Louisville, KY, on June 26, 2009. We hope our members will come help us celebrate TechRepublic's 10-year anniversary. Find out more about the event and other places of interest while you're in town.

Since 2009 is the 10-year anniversary of TechRepublic's launch in May of 1999, we'd like invite our loyal community members to Louisville, Kentucky (where TechRepublic launched as a startup), to help us celebrate! This TechRepublic Community Event will take place on Friday, June 26, 2009, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Northeast Louisville (details listed below) from 2:00 to 5:00 PM, along with other informal gatherings on Friday night and Saturday.

Ever since we first announced this event in TR Out Loud a couple weeks ago, many of you have been asking great questions about what's going to happen at the event and what else there is to do in Louisville while they're in town - places to stay, good restaurants, attractions, and other places of interest. So, we're going to answer those questions in this post. If you have additional questions, please feel free to ask them in the discussion thread or send an e-mail to trol@techrepublic.com.

About the Community Event

Since this is a Community Event, it is open to all registered TechRepublic members. Aside from meeting your TR peers, you can expect to see a quick recap of TechRepublic over the past 10 years and hear a few words from the TechRepublic staff and TR members brave enough to come up to the microphone.

We'll have light refreshments, a few awards, and a special swag bag for all attendees. We realize that not everyone will be able to make it to Louisville, so we're also planning to broadcast the live event via streaming video and even offer it later as a video download on demand.

A dinner location (TBD) will be reserved for the community members who'd like to eat, mix, and mingle that evening, from approximately 6:00 to 9:30 PM. Each person will be responsible for his or her own drinks and dinner. However, the next morning, TechRepublic will pick up the tab for an optional brunch on Saturday (brunch location is TBD). A sign up sheet for brunch will be available at the Community Event.

Where to stay

The Hilton Garden Inn at the Summit location has not only graced us with a banquet room for the Community Event, but they have also generously offered a block of rooms at the discounted rate of $84 per night, available Thursday through Sunday night. All reservations at the Hilton Garden Inn must be made before May 24, 2009. When you call, mention the "TechRepublic" event in order to get the discount. Here's the contact information:

Well after today I'm even more eager to see the event. I'm glad that it will be available via streaming video and as a download. All this talk of facial hair and the Blonde bomshell that was dropped today, I'm waiting in anticipation for the event to unfold. I bet that there will be a few more surprises. Edit: time check

Planning time. Need to know. What and when is up with black and slinky? What day/night? Can we change out of it after? My black and slinky might be a tad much for a joint named 'Fox and Hound'. I mean, there's only 19 days left! :D

Now who's going to cause all the lights to go dim, and electronics batteries to inexplicably drain?

A Style that people can understand. I used to have someone like Boxy do my Tax. After 3 Audits and lots of fines I gave them the flick though I do admit that it was interesting watching the Tax Auditor going insane slowly. Didn't help that I was agreeing with them all the time while asking the accountant why he did things that way. :^0 Col

as there's a big song down Melbourne way about his behaviour, it's called - Up There Cazaly - and the chorus is - Get up there an at 'em, show 'em your might - and it's about a bunch of Aussie Rules football players. ganyssa isn't far from me, so she might come along for the ride. Was looking to ride with James, but he has a car full with his family coming along. Still working out the details, and after i know for sure I still have to get back to him on this. Having someone to share the driving with would make it a lot easier, that is for sure. Are nothing more than a Transformer and a couple of Passive Components. So they have a Bridge Rectifier to convert AC to DC and a capacitor or 2 to smooth out any fluctuations from the mains. The reality is that the Plug Packs only provide the Devices Requirement so say it's a Mobile Phone they only supply the 6 or so volts that the Phone uses to recharge the battery. NB's work on the same principal but their Mains Adapter is all Electronic and uses Switch Mode technology and Chopping Transistors to produce a output similar to a Desktop Computers Power output from the Power Supply. Depending on the NB in question it can have either a single Stable Input Voltage or it can have several Input Voltages to run the NB itself and charge the Battery. Most of the electronics inside a NB run on 5 V DC so things like the Optical Drive, HDD, and so on require 5 V DC and the CPU and RAM can use between 1.3 to 3.2 Volts. So most NB's only have a Mains Input high enough to charge the battery and run the monitor which chews up the most electricity in the unit. The other devices no matter what they are that are Dual Voltage are things like TV's where they run on a lower internal voltage and the 240 or 110 Mains is stepped down to the internal voltage required to run the unit. The older things had a switch something like the Voltage Switches on some Computer Power Supplies but the new ones do this automatically when they sense the input voltage through a simple clean design that removes the need for the switch. ;) Col 0:-)

Shellbot
Shellbot

what yer talking about.. i know you can't go UP from 100 to 240..duhhhhh ]:) GG and I live on the OTHER side of the planet where we have 240 volt..so if our electronics are new-ish, they will work, because the plug (thingy at the end which plugs into wall) has some doo-hicky in it to regulate the current or such.. For axample, the pluggy thing on my phone says 100 - 240 volts. So therefore, I CAN plug it in in the US, provided I have an adapter so I can jack into a 2 pronged socket. And it will work with 110 volts (so i am told) because the product has been designed to work between those volatages.. i wonder, is it a case that its actually running on 110 and the plug is restricting the juice? now.. pllsshhh

OH Smeg
OH Smeg

Your Maths is Impressive to think that 240 Volts is lower than 110 Volts Just remind me to Never allow you near my books. :p Much more importantly never send me a Bill unless you need it questioned. :D The problem with stepping up to 240 V from 110 is that you need twice as much current to have the same effect or do the same job. This taxes the 110 Volt Wiring and can overload it causing Circuit Breakers to trip or fuses to blow quite often. It will also cause Safety Switches to produce False Positives or break the circuit to prevent electrocution. ;) While you are correct that most modern Electronics can handle Dual Voltages these days in GG case hers can't so that is the issue here. Also most of the Electronics today are built as Dual Voltage not to make things easier for World Travelers but to make it cheaper for the maker of those devices as there is no possibility of the wrong parts ending up in the wrong parts of the world or worse still a badly supervised Production Run of their products ending up with the wrong voltage for the destination country. I've seen that happen previously and then we had to convert every machine back to 240 V from the supplied 110 V. I'm told that the first person who plugged one of those in got a real surprise. But other than the light bulb blowing immediately I do not believe that it was at all impressive. It certainly wasn't like plugging in a 32 V to 240 V that is interesting and you don't forget it ever. That first happened to me in the early 70's and I can still vividly remember it. :D Col

Shellbot
Shellbot

that means i'm 1/2 right then and thats all that counts ]:) most electronics these days are variable anyones..

NickNielsen
NickNielsen

It's the input voltage to the devices which has to be changed, not the voltage the devices run on. The 120 V in the US would need to be stepped up to 240 V. It's actually fairly easy to get 240V outlets, but they have to be installed by a certified electrician to meet legal requirements.

Shellbot
Shellbot

as she's UK, all her gear is 240v..so just needs to convert them down...so i'm right.. haha

OH Smeg
OH Smeg

And the States runs on 110 Volts so you need to convert from 110 to 240 Volts. This isn't the cheapest way to go either. :( Col

OH Smeg
OH Smeg

You can step down from 240 V to 110 but you can not safely or cheaply step up the voltages. So going from 110 Volts to 240 Volts isn't practicable. Col

NickNielsen
NickNielsen

That's odd. Most of my chargers/adapters have "90~250 VAC" for the input voltage. It's usually the Europeans who have the multi-voltage kit and the Americans who have the 120 VAC-only stuff.

gadgetgirl
gadgetgirl

no, I didn't forget that one, it takes ordinary batteries, but I forgot to ask what voltage I'm converting to..... (rolls eyes) I'm on 240v..... what am I looking for?! oh look. GG is having another brain dead and dangerous day. No change there, then..... GG

phone not dual voltage (told you I needed a new one!) Phone has to be on 24/7 for Ma and Pa, so won't get 3 days out of it. Will check voltage on camera charger. MP4 charges with USB, but I can't take the lappy (having trouble carrying anything heavier than a litre of milk after the crash!) ok, I'll head over to eBay for voltage converters, dammit. There goes some more of my spending money.... AAARRGGHH! X-( Thanks, Shell (that makes it 4 drinks, right?!) GG

Shellbot
Shellbot

you need voltage converter.. but ckeck yer stuff..soem of the newer stuff is dual voltage..but not everything.. why do ya need to charge the phone, surely you'll get 3 days charge out of it..yer hardly gonna eb using it much?? mp4..can u charge it with usb?

gadgetgirl

I have travel adaptors, and all I'm going to need them for is charging phone, camera and MP4 player. Do I need a voltage converter too? Last time I was over there I used a combi unit, but that's long since died and these ones are just adaptors.... I SERIOUSLY can't afford to have all that kit explode on me! Help, peeples? GG oh, and the other "gadgets" take ordinary batteries.... 0:-) ]:) Edit(s): I can't type for Schmit today....
