With all of the TR guys getting their 15 minutes of fame on the site, I thought it about time to shine the TR Member Spotlight on another female in the mix -- Gena Gill, better known in the forums as GSG.

Find out how GSG got involved in IT, what a typical work day looks like, projects she's working on, biggest pet peeve, hobbies, and much more.  Listen to the podcast.

what with GSG's spotlight being displayed in the rotation on the forum front page for a while, but since she is getting the silly emails asking for help I don't anymore. ]:) seems the spotlight is being used by those who don't want to post publcly to have members to send peermail to, since the top 100 list isn't as accessible.

Every forum I participate in I end up being the Den Mother. How does this happen??? GSG, you're darned right I would keep your secrets! And thank you, that is a lovely compliment! Another great interview, Sonja! And GSG, you sound just like yourself!

I don't drink Coffee. :D No more posting for me though by the looks of things. I'll now just have to go and chew on a chocky for a long time to console myself. That 10 Kilo Block that SWMBO bought recently looks good even if its not Swiss Chocolate. ?:| But if this makes you feel better Sonja I once trashed a new BMW Race Motor because the Engine Management Program that I wrote on a 486 didn't burn at all well on the Pentium that we used to burn the EPROM's. Well I got the blame as per usual but it was a new computer and the first time it was used when that cheap BMW motor self destructed. It didn't even look spectacular it just stopped and never worked again. :( Now if it had of exploded and wrecked the Engine Test Room it would have been worth the effort but just stopping without so much as a puff of smoke wasn't worth all the time & effort that I spent writing that piece of code. :_| Naturally after the problem was worked out the Pentium was removed from that job and replaced with a 486 till we had all moved to the Pentium CPU's. Great Excuse not to change for a long time though. :^0 But I suppose you can not even claim that problem with the Apple stuff that is being used here right? :) OH I know what the problem is Davette's/Boxy's Typing Lessons have proved detrimental to your work haven't they? Or maybe TR's new look broke it. ;) Col ]:)

OK so I'm guilty of telling at least one female that she would never make it in IT. But she was dragging her A$$ and expecting the ideas to be delivered to her on a Silver Platter and wasn't doing the work she was employed to do so I shoved a Bug up her A$$ to make her work. And it worked a treat though a while latter she worked out what had happened and continued to abuse me at every opportunity. :D But that Unnamed person was right at the time you are still learning your job today so it's about time that you knuckle down and earn the money that you get paid. Shees not knowing Linux yet is inexcusable particularly in a Medical situation where they used to live on Unix in the old days. Even now most of the Horespitals here still have Unix Mainframes and they get all the new kids in who have trouble making the Windows Environment interface with the Servers to retrieve Patient Records. In a position like that it is inexcusable not knowing all there is to know about Linux Honestly. That's probably why I hear so many bad things said by Medical Staff about Unix still today. Though the Specialists no longer mistake MS for the disease well most don't any longer. :D Actually great to hear of another female who is doing well in IT we need more of you in the field. ;) It gives the geekiest of us an excuse to not be constantly looking inside hardware all the time though quite a few women get an inferiority complex after seeing how the Geeks live. :^0 Cheers Col ]:)

There's really not much of HAL9000 left that actually does function properly . . . . . ;) Jeez - I've been waitin' a whole year to drop that one in !! :D

And what exactly with the Something actually be? Maybe a Lot of Drugs to treat your Physiocratic Condition? Or is that you are getting Double Helpings of Lobotomies? My personal favourite is the treatment for Gravel Rash along with Broken Legs they scrub the Gravel and other contaminates out of the open gaping oozing wound and then tape you all up again. The next day they repeat the procedure all over again but this time add in the 4 miles of Surgical Tape that need to be torn off along with all the body hair. Then when that are suitably satisfied they tape you all up again so that they can repeat the treatment all over again in either a few hours or next day depending on how long you have gone through the Treatment. :^0 Perhaps I should visit The Scummy in the Whorspital and do exactly what I did to the last person that I paid a visit to in one of those places I walked in and asked the person why he had failed in his attempt to kill himself? The Nurses overheard this and organized Treatment for his condition as he was attempting to self harm himself. He really never should have gone near that Red Roster Place where he got run down but I understand that he loves the Shrink who is now treating him. :D See I've helped to cure him of all his problems so instead of just needing surgery to reset the broken leg he is now undergoing ongoing Physatritac Treatment for his other problems. Should get out of the place when he is eventually cured in about 5 or 6 years time. :^0 Col ]:)

It's just that rubbish American Spooling that confuses everything with all the Missing U's and silly Z's instead of S's it's only expected. :0 OH it's correct Spooling is Horrorspital as well. Anytime that you are in the hands of the Caring Profession you are in Big Trouble. :p Col ]:)

Yes, you do sound like yourself. No, you don't have that Springfield drawl (I have family in Springfield). I really enjoyed hearing your story, GSG. Particularly the bit about the 'unnamed' one and the cert. People are funny, and sometimes it is satisfying to be able to show them up. Maybe not nice, but satisfying. Like the music again, too. Good addition, that.

Great -- PM me if you want Linux help! We can be lost together :^0 WOW, you move a lot and you accent is sexy.. P.S. -- MS speelcheck is ALWAYS right :^0 LOL -- I love stories like that. Great going with the cert AND display -- LOL

Don't piss me off. This Dude really pissed me off when he said I was too stupid to be in IT, and too stupid to pass the test. When I brought my cert in I told him that I got 100% right in all categories but one, and that this stupid chick passed first try. I proceeded to ask how many times he'd failed, knowing full well, he'd failed for the 3rd time. As far as my name is concerned, I've been known, after the 2nd time of telling someone how it's spelled, to reply to emails from the offender, swapping all of the e's with i's and the i's with e's in the entire body. As far as Linux goes, I'm excited. It's going to be a big change, but I love learning to work with something new. Oh, and props to Sonja for spelling my name right the very first time when she emailed me regarding some swag a couple of months ago. I was impressed!

1 or 2 books a year, and it usually takes me months to complete. Well, except they are not novels. The last novels that I read were the LOTR series, which took about 3 weeks total.

than anywhere else (except at that nasty W word place). When I leave that place, I am more likely to shoot the cr@p outta something, or crash a whole bunch of drivers, or.... Well, you get the idea :D

I'll literally read anything. I just finished an 800 page book in 3 days. That was a little long for me, but I was travelling for training, and was pretty tired. I taught myself to read when I was 3 after my mom refused to read "Green eggs and Ham" for the 4th time in one day. She hated Dr. Seuss, so she told me to read it myself. So, I did, and that, as they say, was history.

Since the interview was cut-off, what did we miss? And, what was cut (I want the good stuff) :D You've got every right to be angry with that a$$. I do love the showing off to him -- LOL Sounds like you got a bit of spunk (good for you). :D If I am slow on the PM's, dont worry. I get to those emails every few days, usually almost every day.

Listen in as TR member GSG fields questions about her IT career and much, much more. I give GSG props for showing disbelievers what a woman can do when she puts her mind to it. You go, grrrl.

When she starts talking about the server cluster, it cuts out, and then stops. This happens with the download as well (at least for me).

after phrase 'purchase of a clustered', with clustered being the last word? Scummy, do you have something to do with this? :D

It should be fixed now. There's a new link. Please let me know if you see/hear any other glitches. I am blazing mad at castfire and our own publishing system right now... too many problems for way too long without any resolution!! $#@&*!!

No, you're right, Hal... I am so powerful that I broke the mp3 in half when I put it through the publishing system, even though the file plays in its entirety on my desktop. Whew... now that I've confessed that, I feel like a much richer worker.
