This is tough, because as we move towards neewer technologies, paper is used for other things. I do not know if we have reduced paper useage at my work, however here are some key things for the reduction of paper useage, as long as people use them and stop printing every web page and email that they see.
Scanners/MFP/Digital Senders -- archive and save paper to digital storage. Options can be to send to a PC, network share, or email.
email -- self explanitory
database applications -- store digital documents with the ability to find them easier
These tools are great for going more or less paperless. However there are those items that need paper as well. However they can be stored electronically and the paper being kept as well.
Now, to help convince people not to use printers is another item. First, make sure that there are not too many large printers (for workgroups).
Remove personal printers from the desktops (people will complain like crazy). If they do complain about confidential printing, then many newer printers have an option to make them more secure. Typing a code at the printer to pickup a job (not useful on larger jobs though).
Adding components to help reduce paper useage, and limiting the available printers should help to 'break' peoples habits of printing everything that they would normally print. There are exceptions to the rule, but this is probably the best way to deal with excessive printing.
charge them for printing.
Maintaining printers, purchasing paper and ink, are all real business expenses.
When you break down the cost and then charge the departments for these business costs, a lot of the "habit" printing will end, as will excessive copies.
And yes, we are also moving away from the printer-on-every-desk mentality. Before people realized how expensive it REALLY is to own an inkjet, EVERYONE got a printer.
Now a few well placed networked lasers is much more economical.
would be to charge the individual for their print jobs :D
If it truly was a business related job, then they can bill it back for reimbursement!
Yes, add extra hassles and the possible loss of real money for the employee.. This should put an end to it all together, can run on 1 printer per floor :D
Edited to add: The new toothbrush didnt wash the Scum out of Scummy after all :D
So they demand that the accounting is removed from the Printing. After all it makes them look bad so it's not good.
I prefer to use Copiers for printing as they are faster cheaper and just plain better. The initial cost of the units also helps to limit the number that are deployed but even still I see them working hard and now they need a staff member beside them to refill and empty them as they either run out of consumables or fill up the output trays.
Still it's a lot cheaper than having a Secretary for each staff member so over all it's much cheaper than what it used to be for the business.
if the bosses see someone running up huge bills, it is a flag being raised.
you can also compare, why is this person printing so much more than these people over here?
helps to identify a person problem.
It would start looking as if the company was getting too cheap. Almost like charging per toilet paper square :^0
In my opinion, the better way would be to place several MFP printers and set them up for email delivery. Setup the secure document printing, and do not have too many of them.
The company should start seeing a decrease in cr@p printing.
The Beth and Sonja show, I like that. B-)
I got a laugh out of the Position. :^0
Get your thoughts out of the gutter Scummy it aint ever gonna happen. ;\
Keep up the good work ladies.
There is nothing wrong with liking girls JD. ;-)

"Just make my computer go -- Thats all I ask"
Vista is bad??? :0
I thought Vista was supposed to be a good thing -- well until MS adopted the name.
TB & Oh Smeg -- what a couple (P.S. -- not a good visual -- I thank you NOT for that)
Now Beth, just what kind of requests would be refused?? :0
Oops, I better not go there :D
tobacco spitting! That means you have to take up chew! Ewwww!
Great podcast again. Loved listening. Phooey. No Skype capability here.
Very cool - Abs off the shhht list.
And - you two sound more comfortable all the time!
if I would have not started my discussion late on a friday afternoon?
Hope I don't jinx us, but notice there haven't been as many OS religion wars recently? Does that mean people are getting bored repeating the same ol' FUD?
Hmm- use less paper??? Nope. The standard office seems to be caught in the paper trap. Processes still exist that require the actual routing of paper prints. In some ways, we are using more paper. A request or work order is frequently printed to accommodate an activity but will be printed several times instead of the necessary once. In order to achieve the "paperless" office, it would be necessary for old habits to be broken.
JDClyde has been telling us all since forever that he likes girls. I think that he says that a bit too frequently. I mean, you never hear me saying that I like boys, now do you? It's just assumed. I think that there is more here than meets the eye. After all, how does he explain his Streisand collection? How does he explain all the show tunes? WHY does he seem compelled to explain them to begin with? I'm just saying...
I eventually got caught up with these podcasts while travelling on the train earlier in the week - sorta bad move.... I had so many gigglefits, the old dear next to me kept moving away... :p :p :D I think I convinced her I'd lot the plot totally. It ain't easy travelling on a train with your fist stuffed in your mouth because you're giggling so profusely..... !!!
Ok, Sonjawithajandalongo and double B - I left you a skype answer! I just hope I was first!!!
(Sonja - chop and edit as much as you like - I have NO idea what happened to the message countdown timer :( )
Great podcast, girls - keep 'em coming!
(jd likes girls? Really? I'd never have guessed.... ]:) )
No, but that's because we like to think all women like other women too; it's a much more interesting and somewhat entertaining way to think of you.
With JD, I appreciate that he reminds us frequently, I don't need the mental picture otherwise.
Well done ladies.
The ONLY thing I would like is more of a description of the cast, like mention of if you call someone up. Sometimes it is there, sometimes it isn't. I always save the MP3 with the date and the person you talk to, so I can keep them organized. B-)
[b]And just WHAT is wrong with liking girls? :0
