Video: TR Out Loud - Community FAQ on July 18, 2008

TechRepublic's Sonja Thompson is in San Francisco this week, checking out multimedia productions at CNET and then attending the BlogHer 2008 conference. Since time was cut too short to recap the data for the top discussions and members of the week, we decided to put together a TROLOV Community FAQ.

TechRepublic's Sonja Thompson is in San Francisco this week, checking out multimedia productions at the main office and then attending the BlogHer 2008 conference. Since time was cut too short to recap the data for the top discussions and members of the week, we decided to put together a TROLOV Community FAQ. The visual aid may be particularly helpful for newer members, and the hardcore members will at least have something to watch on Friday morning with their cup of coffee. If you're not a fan of video (sorry about the Flash, Jaqui), you can choose to just listen to the audio file.

Notes:

Here are the three features that we highlighted on today's TROLOV Community FAQ:

 1. Discussions vs. Questions
 2. Print/View all posts
 3. Swag

As for the last item, the almighty swag, we have plenty of fun stuff to choose from, such as mugs, shirts, toolkits, frisbees, balls, pens, flags, and disposable cameras. We also have the following list of premium products:

 • IT Vendor Management Tool Kit (CD-ROM)
 • IT Managers Hiring Tool Kit (CD-ROM)
 • PC Troubleshooter Resource Guide, Fifth Edition (Book with CD-ROM included)
 • IT Security Survival Guide, Second Edition (Workbook with CD-ROM included)
 • IT Professional's Guide to Project Management, Volume 2 (Workbook with CD-ROM included)
 • Administrator's Guide to TCP/IP, Second Edition (Workbook with CD-ROM included)
 • IT Professional's Guide to Desktop Control, Second Edition (Workbook with CD-ROM included)

I've also found the video with no thread below, a Start A Discussion, and a list of other videos while trying to get here, where I knew a thread existed. Search is very little help (e.g., TROLV gets you nowhere). The real issue: While a series of video faqs is great (nice one, Sonja!), what the heck happened to the old FAQ? (Sorry, "New! FAQ") The link was at the top of the page with the little New! medallion. Please, please, do not tell me that it has been replaced by the one that the Site Help and Feedback link at the bottom of the page takes you to. It is horrible, does not function properly, and has a lot of extra stuff in it which completely buries the useful tidbits from the old FAQ. Eight results per "page" in a tiny little box? Someone is yanking my chain. I would be (correction, am) embarrassed to send a helpless "newbie" there to find answers. Heck, if you do a TR search for "FAQ", it should be the permanent first result at the very least, but not in its current form. Gag me with a vorpal weapon. Sorry, did I say that the video was really cool, just like Sonja? If I did, I'm saying it again. You go, Multimedia Woman.

The "New user guide to TechRepublic," continues to be a good resource for newbies on the site: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/techofalltrades/?p=152 As far as the old FAQ or "New! FAQ" -- you got me. Fortunately, I have a good group of TR folks, like yourself, to help me answer questions that crop up in the forums. Oh, and thanks for the kudos, Sean. As a side note, ever since our Spotlight interview, I wonder "Where is Sean when I need him?" whenever I'm trying to fix stuff around the house. ;) Hope that you are well.

Thanks for the tips! Very helpful since I'd been off TechRepublic for a while. Min

It is a start, but not quite what the old FAQ was. Long story short, I was PMed by someone who knew nothing of the TR. The old FAQ would have pretty much covered what she needed to know. I'm glad that I saved a copy long ago. So I pointed her at TROLOV instead. :) I don't know how a new user would stumble into this guide, if looking for help, but now I can point folks somewhere. Emoticon explanations also seem to be lacking, here as well as on ZDNet, but there are threads I can point to, providing OnTheRopes' image server continues hosting his emoticon chart. Otherwise, I can only provide what I have stored. As to my absence, yes, things really heated up around here at the time of my interview, then just continued to heat up. There has been a lot of renovation, damage control, side jobs, damage control, and damage control in my little world. A lot of things had been on hold previously. At the time of our Spotlight chat, one of my buildings had just finally been released back to my tender care after having a new second floor deck installed. (I had warned them.) I've had some patches of higher TR activity, especially when I was doing work in the building in which I reside, or when I could do smaller fiddly things near my computer. (Yay!) I must admit that I have a lot of catching up to do in the TROL/OV/Spotlight arena. You've interviewed a lot of interesting people, and what I've listened to is great. Keep up the good work. You do video well, in addition to audio-only. I hope that you are well, also. Since you mention it, ever since our Spotlight interview I've felt subject to eat-and-run syndrome, as I did the interview and just disappeared. It is odd, as I felt like I disappeared, a discrete state of mind separate from missing TR, which I did also. Cheers! :)

You are really trying to get me going, aren't you? You know I have ways of getting you back...

I'm on the inside, and I didn't even know about the "New" features. It's a nice surprise though, so I'm not complaining. See? You're not blind after all. :)

I just need to get back into all the corners of TR. :)

I found the New! FAQ again. Now I'm left to wonder if I'm going blind, or if the thing was actually gone for a while. If I missed it, I fully retract my semi-rant-like post. http://techrepublic.com.com/1200-10871-5757160.html I don't remember seeing the co-located "My forum posts" link or the New! medallion, either.

Running another CPU-intensive process: The "Keep from being strange" process. Then again, what passes for strange elsewhere tends not to be so strange at TR. :)

stranger than WHAT or don't be stranger than WHO? :0 And just who are YOU to tell SF not to be strange in the first place?!?! :0 :0 Are you now going to discriminate against strange people?! :0 Set up a "no strange zone"? :0 :0 :0 Oh yeah, welcome back! :x

Disappearing - physically and mentally - happens. Just remember that you have a lot of peers here, myself included, who enjoy seeing you when you're ready to tune in. :)

Is that a Pool or Billiards term from China? 四個暗示 And what's all this about forks? Where are the spoons? ..and where was the mention of Thumbs for that matter? :-( ...so confused. :D

boxfiddler

is actually faux cue. Similar in appearance to the Sneaky Pete, it is usually strategically placed in pool halls so that the 'sucker of the day' (who rarely brings his own) is stuck with a cue full of slivers, a bad tip, and virtually always too much weight combined with extremely bad balance. ;)

boxfiddler
boxfiddler

one of the sponsored links at the moment is McDermott Cues. I had one for awhile and it was real nice cue. Well balanced, pretty wood. I lost it to my opponent in a one-pocket game. Shouldn't have been playing one-pocket in the first place. But I was young(er) and way too cocky. :(

CaptBilly1Eye
CaptBilly1Eye

Kewl that you have that skill. A friend of mine in Ypsilanti, MI was playing Pool professionally last time I saw him (seven years ago). Me, I'm just a Poke & Hope kinda player. I'd say just slightly above average. Occassionally, I get lucky and look better at it than I really am.

boxfiddler
boxfiddler

and haven't played for several years now. I play 8 ball, 9 ball, 3 ball, pea ball, one pocket. But I don't play one pocket well. 9 ball is my preference. But in the past I have had several 8 and 9 ball teams that made it to state finals for different leagues. We never took it quite seriously enough to get past state, too busy partying and having fun to blast other teams out of the water. I still have my cue, and am thinking about taking it up again if I can find a 9 ball team nearby that wants a player. etu

CaptBilly1Eye
CaptBilly1Eye

Boxie the Pool Shark. :) who'd a figured. I plays a bit. But like golf, I haven't done much since the move two years ago. ...gotta find a comfortable place to play. So many of the local places were not what I'd call 'comfortable.' if ya gets me drift. ;-)

CaptBilly1Eye
CaptBilly1Eye

thought it coulda been Fore Cue. Like a new game that's a hybrid of golf and billiards. Whew! That woulda been strange. :^0

Don't work. The read is great from that angle, but you can't see the cup for cr@p! And the english won't hold for more than a foot or two... ;)

boxfiddler

referred to golf as 'pasture pool'. :D Hmmm... I wonder if my golf game would improve if I used a cue for putting instead of a club? etu

Robbed, I tell you! Sonja, just for that I am preparing to overload your email with pictures from training walks! Have you ever seen feet after a 14 mile walk? Well, you're gonna! How about bad tan lines? Yep, you will get those too! And I need another coffee cup. Well, three to be exact. I must maintain my SWAG position after all!

The next time I go out of town -- business or vaca -- and record a TROLOV FAQ (I'll never be able to say it the same... LOL), I'll be sure that Thumbs Up are one of the things I talk about. I may even borrow maecuff's shovel to send home the message. :)

I remember the time I stabbed my older brother in the arm with a fork (the big ones you use to cook with). Shouldn't have hit me while I had something at hand to try to defend myself with! B-) Yeah, drew blood, sweet blood. Of course, when the parents weren't around, he had many times. What comes around goes around......
