Many thanks to Boxfiddler, Jellimonsta, and Old Mycroft for sending in photos. Hal 9000 sent in an answer to Boxfiddler's questions about recycling electronic equipment and TR's Friday Night Music participation reluctance:

Depending on what is everything gets recycled as if it isn't already in it soon will be that no Electronic Components can end up in Land Fill. Currently I have a deal with a local Battery Supplier to dump all the dead Batteries with them and they dispose of them. They are probably making money but it saves me the Time & Hassle of doing it myself.

The remaining bits and pieces are sent to a Local Computer Recycling Works minus any HDD's as we don't allow any HDD's to leave the place at all. We pull these apart and destroy the Platters, the remaining bits of the HDD go to the Local Data Recovery House here for their use. I personally think that they keep the Circuit Boards in case they ever need them and sell on the Alloy as Scrap Metal though I'm not overly sure on that but they wouldn't need the number of Drives that I give them.

That covers the Dead Equipment and HDD's from decommissioned equipment. Working stuff either goes to a Local Tech College to teach Hardware Repair or their own use Particularly NB's that are pulled out of Service as they don't get enough of those.

Previously we used to Sell working Second Hand Equipment that had passed it's Tax Deductible State after removing the HDD's and fitting new ones but we left these blank so whoever got the Hardware eventually there was no possibility of Recovering any Data off the Drives. But this is no longer done as it's too Labour Intensive and the costs are just too great. HDD's are removed because most of the customers have Legislation in Place Mandating what happens to old Hardware or HDD's at least so we have our hands tied there anyway.

As for Friday Night Music, I don't actually have a Life anymore so I don't visit in there because I'm way too cheap and will not buy the Add On for my Life. Right at the moment with the end of the Financial Year a few days off things are insane here so I get very little time to do anything at all not work related right at the moment though Next Month things should settle down to a more normal workload.

This time around, Old Mycroft asked the following question: "What do TR members call their computers?" Since Old Mycroft bought a new phone, let's help him name it! Send answers to his question, plus name suggestions for his phone, to TROL at cnet.com.Last but not least, I'd love to see some more photos of TR members, even if they are from more youthful days, and photos of TR member's pets -- that's pets as in animals. Send all comments, questions, photos, and video clips to TROL at cnet.com. We also have voice mail... our toll free number is (866)-414-CNET (2638) and our Skype ID is tr.out.loud. If you see your e-mail or hear your voice message on TROLOV, that means that you're eligible for free stuff. You can have your pick of some TR goodies, including mugs, shirts, toolkits, frisbees, disposable cameras, and the following list of premium products:
 • IT Vendor Management Tool Kit (CD-ROM)

I don't call them, they are inanimate objects that wouldn't respnd anyway. :p I use a descriptive host name so I know which machine I'm connecting to in the network. things like toshiba-satelight-p3.domain.com for the p3 toshiba satelite laptop. definately not creative, but useful.

NoGoodLouseyHunkOfCr@p It seems to respond well to that.

And it is yet to break. But not one of those cheap Plastic type rulers but a yard long parallel Ruler used by draftsmen. No paint left on the left hand side of the case but it's still working perfectly. :D I just love to watch him punish the Workstation willing it to work faster. :D Col ]:)

I had a Trany that was tested that way and it wasn't a cheap one either. I freaked when I saw the Tech Drop it onto concrete from about 5 feet and his only comment was if it doesn't work after that there is Something Wrong With It. Duh how obvious can you get? May not have hurt the Electronics but somehow I don't think that the CRTs wouldn't have taken to kindly to that type of Testing. :D Not to mention the SCSI Drives that Apple used to use they where really expensive and hardly overly robust. But it would have been fun just like standing with a fire hose at full blast in a Main Frame Room. Not the best way to work but after a flood the only way to clean out the place. :D I can still see the looks of Horror on the faces of the Management when I told them how I cleaned out their Multi Million $ Systems Clean Room that had several feet of foul smelling black mud through it. :^0 Col

From a specified height, it was the only way the components could be guaranteed to get seated properly. Horizontal Desktop type, Standard Workbench height. (So I've Read!) ;)

A long time ago I made the mistake of telling one to Boot the Computer and he did right out the door then complained that he had injured his foot. After that incident he settled for carnying a computer outside and parking a Big Excavator on it as he found that less painful. Well I have to laugh at things like that but I did laugh so much that I had to leave a new client on the first visit when he parked the excavator on the computer it was all I could do not to burst into tears from laughing so hard when he did that. :D The other guy with the ruler is just as bad but I have to admit that him hitting the case with the ruler has lost some of it's entertainment value since all the paint has disappeared watching bits of paint flake off the case and land in the keyboard was entertaining. :^0 Col ]:)

If you were the subject of a hostile attack from outside the network. Mis-spelling of satellite would fool a crawler would it? My 'puters names don't indicate what they are. :p

toshiba-satelight-p3 was really an AMD white box? Then the name is secure and misleading... to any one with the most limited hardware assessment tools. And in reality, if they just got past your firewall, the computer host names on the network are not going to be much of an issue.... Hacker: "OMGZ! This toshiba-satelight-p3 is not a toshiba satellite! I've been pwned bi l337 @dm!|V skillz! ALL YOUR BASE SHOULD HAVE BELONGED TO ME!" Admin: "Heh! Noob. Skript-tard."

Trying to get me to respond to a Post in the Q & A Forum with this account. Not going to happen though GG As I caught myself in time. :p I'm currently buying Remote Control Helicopters on E-Bay and I always buy 2 at a time for Spare Parts. Lets see at a $1.00 each + Postage I just can not afford not to buy 2 at a time. :D Of course SWMBO didn't quite see things that way till I sent her out for some Spare Parts like Rotor Blades and then she stopped complaining. :D Even the postage is less than a set of Rotor Blades so I'm coming out on top. :^0 Now if I talk to Sonja about some TR Stickers to put on my Fleet maybe............... ;) OH while we are on the Subject raised by OZ are you still the Queen Geek? Or did that role get passed onto another? what percentage of idiots are in amongst 5500 users, and there's only one ME??!! I've been averaging an incident every two damn days for the past five weeks. I'm wrecked! On leave this week: that just means working at home rather than working at work. Worse pay and longer hours..... :( I'll try to pop in - honest. Yes JD I have to agree with you here They are under counting your posts to TR aren't they? ;) Really should be much closer to 56,942 Posts this week by you instead of the piddling number that they listed. But here I'm supposing that they are trying to cover their backs and not listing all your posts because the Advertisers would want cheaper rates when they see that you are the major contributer here and never buy anything or even know that there are Adds on TR. :^0 Col ]:)

according to some, that's her right of freedom and liberty to do that cause she's not hurting anyone else. Of course, it gives me less to read...so I am bored now...and I'm not going to start a whole new web interface with 1:51:26 left in my day. Oh well. Well what can I say about Bring your Kids to Work Day? How about Be Afraid Very Afraid. :D Junior School Children Writing about the Sea. Priceless!!! 1) This is a picture of an octopus. It has eight testicles. (Kelly age 6) 2) Oysters' balls are called pearls. (James age 6) 3) If you are surrounded by sea you are an island. If you don't have sea all around you, you are incontinent. ( Wayne age 7) 4) Sharks are ugly and mean, and have big teeth, just like Emily Richardson. She's not my friend no more. (Kylie age 6) 5) A dolphin breaths through an ar$ehole on the top of its head. (Billy age 8) 6) My uncle goes out in his boat with pots, and comes back with crabs. (Millie age 6) 7) When ships had sails, they used to use the trade winds to cross the ocean. Sometimes, when the wind didn't blow, the sailors would whistle to make the wind come. My brother said they would be better off eating beans. (William age 7) 8) I like mermaids. They are beautiful, and I like their shiny tails. How do mermaids get pregnant? (Helen age 6) 9) I'm not going to write about the sea. My baby brother is always screaming and being sick, my dad keeps shouting at my mum, and my big sister has just got pregnant, so I can't think what to write. (Amy age 6) 10) Some fish are dangerous Jellyfish can sting. Electric eels can give you a shock They have to live in caves under the sea where I think they have to plug themselves into chargers. (Christopher age 7) 11) When you go swimming in the sea, it is very cold, and it make my willy small. (Kevin age 6) 12) Divers have to be safe whey they go under the water. Two divers can't go down alone, so they have to go down on each other. (Becky age 8) 13) On holiday my mum went water skiing. She fell off when she was going very fast. She says she won't do it again because water shot up her fanny. (Julie age 7 Col ]:)

I feel it must be pointed out WHY I "haven't had a phone in 6 years." I'm usually online at home or elsewhere throughout the day and when I'm not online I've got a mobile phone that I always carry with me. I just don't (sorry! - DIDN'T!) see the need for a landline telephone in the 21st Century. Then I get an email from the 'highly respected' Sonja Thompson, saying that in order to interview me for the Spotlight, I had to have a landline! What could I say? Stick to my principles or crumble? I just don't want fellow peers thinking I'm a real old duffer that had to go and buy a phone so TR could contact him. ;) And what's all this stuff about christening my new phone?? I'll be expecting extra swag for that!! :^0
